Stripping repainted furniture?

I have just been given a lovely dressing table. It's wood painted cream, but previous owner has applied a - poor - thin coat of white paint on the table top. I'd like to remove the white paint, then touch up the original cream.

What's the best way? Chemicals or sandpaper? What would be the best paint for touching up the original cream paint?

It's a lovely piece of furniture, just spoilt by the daubed on white paint. I've never restored furniture before, am a total novice, in fact I know nothing about painting furniture.

Thanks Smile

Just sand it down....you don't need to remove all the white paint...just some in order to rough up the surface ready for repainting.

Thanks Smile I don't really want to repaint, the original cream colour is lovely, but it's a bit battered around the edges.

But it's cream painted originally no?

Yes, the original colour is cream and I'd like to keep it that colour, but someone has slapped a thin and uneven coat of white paint on the top.

Yes so sand it down and repaint...you don't need to remove it all.

Thanks Smile Any recommendations of paint to use? It's quite a dark cream, almost a beige.

Annie Sloan...it's very good and the colours are realistically vintage what do you think? the cream is good but you can mix if it's not?

Thanks Smile Looks good.

Tbh I think I'm going to struggle to find the same colour, am really worried I'll have to repaint the whole thing Hmm I don't want to do that, but not sure how I can avoid it. I can't buy several different colours of paint to mix at that sort of price! Shock
