IKEA beds

Is it true that "normal" "king sized" or "double" mattresses don't fit IKEA bed frames? Reason I ask is I've just bought 2 new beds, but want to keep our old mattresses. I measured the mattresses before leaving home and the double is 140 x 200 and the king sized is 160 x 200. IKEA gives the same measurements so I think they should fit? But heard lots of people in there talking about how only IKEA mattresses go on IKEA beds.

I don't want to have to pay the delivery charge twice so if I need to buy mattresses as well I should do it now.

Has anyone had this problem?

We've just bought a new King size mattress. We did look in Ikea, but when we measured our bed frame, we realised that their mattress would not fit it. Shame, as they're really affordable.

My problem though was the reverse of yours - I had the frame and needed the mattress. You'd be best to check out the beds in store and check with one of their own sales advisory staff, I think.

Ikea beds are wider than normal beds so your mattresses will fit, but there'll be a bit of a gap at the sides.

Those sizes sound like they are ikea sizes already! Standard uk mattresses are something like 137x190 for a double and 150x200 for a king.

Yes, your 160x200 is a european kingsize/large double so will fit the larger Ikea base
UK kingsize is 150x200

I'm about to buy an ikea bed and mattress. not sure if 140x200 or 160x200 is a normal double.

I don't want to be unable to buy sheets and duvet cases anywhere but ikea from now on!

would a normal fitted sheet for a double be too small for a 160x200 ikea mattress & bed?? anybody bought a 160x200 bed able to tell me!?

ok thanks monniemae! so, hmm, 140X200 is a bit smaller than a normal double bed so.....

ZolaBuddleia · 02/09/2013 22:22

Ikea do a small selection of their own mattresses in UK sizes, but otherwise they're not standard.

ZolaBuddleia · 02/09/2013 22:23

Look on the mattress part of their website and they have a link to their UK sized ones so you'll be able to compare.

Zoe909 · 02/09/2013 22:27

in argos for example, standard would seem to be 205 x 150.

I'd prefer that tbh. think I might go with argos and and argos mattress.

( want to be able to buy fitted sheets in Tesco and pennys)

No they aren't standard, we bought a double bed frame many yeara ago and when we needed a new mattress had to get one made. Wouldn't get another mattress from ikea as such bad quality and had to replace it after only a couple of years. Nothing in ikea fits anything standard uk sizes! Don't get me start on the lamp shades.....

monniemae · 03/09/2013 13:06

no a normal Uk double is 140 or 135 x 200
the uk king is 150 x 200
the european king or "large double" at habitat etc is 160 x 200

monniemae · 03/09/2013 13:07

wikipedia has a "bed size" page which clearly outlines all the sizes x

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 03/09/2013 13:15

You'll only need the fitted sheets for an IKEA mattress, duvets are the same size.

I bought an IKEA double bed and had my normal mattress on it for about 8 months, it was fine.

I then got an IKEA mattress, bought 3 fitted sheets for it (?7 each, in a diff colour from the other ones in the house) , and it's fine with my normal duvet.

Ikea beds and therefore mattresses are longer than other ones.
