Adding another loo....yes or no?

We have a 4 bed 1930s semi that has a cloakroom downstairs & a separate loo & small bathroom upstairs (not next to each other so can't knock through).

We're just about to have the bathroom re-done & deciding whether its worth squeezing another loo in there. At the moment it's just me, DH & baby DD but there's always the possibility of another DC at a later date! The extra loo would probably be to the detriment of some storage & a towel rail.

How useful would a third loo be in future years with DCs? Grin

I think if the space is there then yes put one in but if you think it would make it all cramped then personally I wouldn't. We have a 1930s 3bed and have a separate bath and toilet upstairs and then have had a downstairs toilet put in. I would love to have a second bathroom but no way one could be fitted in.

You already have 2 separate toilets? I wouldn't bother personally. I have a 1930s semi but its a smaller one with no room for a downstairs loo under the stairs (our boiler is in there anyway now) and Id be over the moon with a bathroom with a loo and a second toilet in a separate room. two loos are plenty in a 3 bed house in my opinion.

sorry, just saw you had a 4 bed!! i still think 2 loos are enough but id you have space then i would. waiting to go for a poo is not fun.

I think it is nicer to have a loo in the bathroom, esp when you have small DCs.
COuld you squeeze a loo in there and convert the existing loo to a storage cupboard for linen/towels/toiletries etc?
Towel rails can be wall hung or you could get underfloor heating for the bathroom not too pricey if its small.

I wouldn't bother if you have two separate loos and a bathroom. I hate the loo in the bathroom but we have a tiny Victorian house so only have one loo in the bathroom and no room for another anywhere else. I'd love a second one somewhere. Would stop me being hauled out of the bath for emergencies. There's a limit to how long DD1 will be prepared to use the potty that I sling outside the door :o

Yes from me. It's nice to have a loo in the bathroom - particularly with littlies - and it's also nice to have a separate toilet. Personally, if you've got space, then I don't think you can have too many toilets (well, until they start outnumbering the people) Wink

We have 2 and tbh, 2 for 5 people is absolutely fine.

If you were going from 1 to 2 then, yes, but 2 to 3? I wouldn't bother, especially as you're 'squeezing' it in. Might it make the bathroom cramped? Always need lots of room round the bath for drying little kids!

I would definitely squeeze a loo into the bathroom. Storage can be fitted in elsewhere, and you can hang a shorter towel rail above the loo. Go for compact fittings to make more space - can you get a countertop basin with storage underneath ?

SoYo · 23/08/2013 08:54

I think that's what we're aiming for. A sink & loo built into a unit so there's storage underneath.

I do like the idea of turning the separate loo into an airing cupboard but DH doesn't think it makes sense to have it taken out.

When you have kids learning to use the loo it is much easier to have it in the same room as the bathroom, also easier at bath time.
You could re-use your existing loo in the bathroom maybe?
