We have some already up from the previous owners and I have bought sme material but I have been putting it off. Is it really difficult?

No, if you can use a sewing machine you can make a Roman blind. But you may struggle to get all the bits that make it professional - eg fibreglass rods etc. If you can re-use anything from the blinds that you already have up then it will be easier.

You need to be super accurate on the measuring so get a metal tape measure or ruler, and give yourself an afternoon to get going - expect it to take a few hours but the first hour when you do all the prep is the crucial bit.

Not difficult but just a faff. Do what I did and make some roll-up ones instead. You just need some dowelling in a channel at the top and bottom, some ties the length of the blind and hang them with those little eyelet hooks on a nail (x2). Mine look great, they have patterned fabric on the front and are plain on the back with plain ties too.

I'm thinking of doing this too. I made a small practice one yesterday and it was ok but not great and I'm nervous about messing up fabric for the bedroom attempt.
Pickled siblings, how do the blinds tie up then?

I'd recommend buying a roman blind kit. They cost about £30 or so depending on the size but you get all the fittings and extras you need including rods, cord, tape pockets etc. Once you've got that the actual sewing and making up is a doddle. I've had kits from Terry's Fabrics and Merrick & Day and both offer quick delivery. The kits really help give a professional finish. Good luck!

I've made them and the key is getting the edges completely straight and your measurements absolutely spot on. I would recommend starting with a fabric that has a vertical stripe - very easy to get the edges better. I'm not great with a sewing machine to be honest, and I found the wider the blind, the more difficult it is. Have a go with a stripey narrow one to start with! Good luck!

Yep I've just made a wobbly one for an unimportant window so it's staying pulled up as a decorative feature! How do you sew a straight line??

Sewing machines usually have a guide next to the foot so if your hem is the same width across the blind, and you follow the line it should be straight. For vertical seams, thats where stripey fabric comes in handy - just follow the stripe! If you use roman blind tape (for securing the rods) that usually has a blue sew line across it which is what you follow.
