could red and purple be a good combo for a nursery?

I'm not doing a theme as such as I think that is weird tbh but need to decorate the room that will be dd's - 16 mo and her sibling - imminent. specifically they need curtains but they will have paint and bedding at some point. I'm wondering about either red or purple curtains but mindful that new baby is unknown gender so don't want to make the room too girly. (we don't do pink anyway)

wdyt?

or alternatively inspire me!!Grin

Red and purple sounds a bit mad to me.

what about pale greens and yellow? or cornflower blue and cream?

Or have the room walls quite plain and have patterned curtains and bedding? maybe with jungle animals / or rainbow colours?

I'm not keen on bright red in bedrooms, but I like bright colours. Purple fabric often has a more feminine look, you might prefer something more multicoloured?

We've got a blind in this fabric and then off white walls and some large wall stickers. I like using wall stickers as there's more scope to change things over time.

You might like these fabrics?

thanks for your comments and inspiration. I guess a better thing to do is find a fabric I love then pick colours out of that. it turns out I am veering towards girly colours without meaning to so need to be careful!!

Fabric is a good place to start--we've done that in most rooms. Enjoy looking!

My 5yo DSs bedroom was decorated before we knew his gender.
It's cream walls, red blackout blind, a bright giant caterpillar (red, blue, purple, orange, green, lime, yellow) across 1 wall
With a yellow lamp & blue curtains.
The cream keeps it calm enough for the vibrant colours.
We are moving and he's asked to have the same colour blind, curtains and lamp. So its lasting & still popular.

I would keep walls neutral, perhaps a pale aqua or yellow. Then have brighter curtains.
As your daughter is still so young too you could go with something very child like with a caterpillar like wonkylegs suggests. Or you could go with jungle animals or something.

We decorated my daughters' room when we moved here but by that point we knew they were both girls. They have an end of the room each and as there are 2 lights they have 2 different lightshades which suit their tastes (similar colours) and they have their own pictures in their own spaces which seems to work well. They do have a duvet set each which are the same but they chose their own other one which is just a similar colour range so it looks ok.

Bright is good but don't go too mad or you might overstimulate them and at the end of the day the primary thing is to hope they will actually sleep!

I personally think greens or yellows are good as they can be combined with girly accents or boy accents or just brights depending on what you want in the future.

well as it happens I've seen some lovely aqua paint in b&q so that might be my starting point now. now to find some corresponding fabric for curtains and persuade dh it isn't a bathroom colour

still don't like themes so jungle etc is out.

thanks for all your help so far!

we have aqua walls (ours was a wilkinsons paint I think - looks really nice) but hot pink carpet and then pink and white gingham curtains. all other furniture and woodwork etc is white. it works well. Aqua looks fresh on the walls. ginghams are quite nice in kids rooms for curtains, they aren't a theme, they are unisex, can't really grow out of them and so on.
what flooring have you got?

QueenMaeve · 17/07/2013 17:25

I like the idea of using bold colours, I'm not really a fan of neutral muted toned. I would go for a scandi type look. Pale walls and curtains with accessories in bright colours, this sort of look
could be for either gender or any age
simple ideas

very grotty carpet that needs to be replaced. I'm thinking something neutrally and hard wearing but can't describe what I mean. def will be carpet tho, flooring is for hallways kitchens and bathrooms here.

gingham or stripes or spots are all good ideas I reckon. have you got a pic?

oddly no I haven't got any pics of their room -not sure why. never thought of it I suppose.

this is the paint we have on the walls. www.wilko.com/wall+ceiling-paint/wilko-colour-matt-emulsion-paint-mint-crisp-25ltr/invt/0196142
it is quite a big room but it is long with the window at one end and even at the other end this paint still looks light and airy. we have been very pleased with it.

I am just trying to think of what colour you could use with it though to be gender neutral.

I agree on carpet in bedrooms, not sure what colour though. I think either a neutral or contrast would be needed if you went with walls with some colour in.

odd suggestion but what about grey? if you got the right shade then pale grey walls and a grey carpet can look really nice -I had my bedroom that colour when I was a child and I always liked it. lots of red cushions, curtains etc could make it look lovely, still bright and cheerful but neutral base, carpet not show marks etc.

poocatcherchampion · 18/07/2013 07:38

thanks - we can't have grey as currently half of the rest of the house is going to be grey.

I'm wondering about orange or red as a colour to go with it but it might depend on what fabric I find. if DC is a girl and we haven't managed to finish start the job in 7 weeks then less to worry about I guess!

thanks for the paint colour though!
