Please suggest some sofa companies I may not have tried or be aware of

We are desperate to buy some new sofas but cannot find the right one (right style but wrong fabric, right style and fabric but wrong colours, right shape but wrong cushion filling....the list goes on)

Please suggest somewhere I might not have tried - we've looked in the usual places like sofasofa, Laura Ashley, all the retail park-type chains, BHS, Debenhams etc

Ideally we want to try before we buy so a shop or showroom around the midlands or SW would be good.

Thanks

Well these are mostly online but I've bought from them over the years with no probs

Dwell
Loaf
Sofa.com
Sofa workshop
Made

Dwell, John Lewis, habitat if there's still one near you, they didn't all close

starlingsintheslipstream · 10/05/2013 19:52

www.multiyork.co.uk/

Thanks for ideas so far.

Loaf and Made are ones I haven't come across before but unfortunately they don't seem to have a showroom anywhere near us.

We went to Dwell but TBH their sofas all looked a bit 'sofa in the waiting room of a trendy office' IYSWIM. Shocking quality of furniture in there generally too.

Shame Habitat have all their shops in London. They do have a concession in Homebase in Birmingham apparently - anyone know it? Do they have many items on display there?

I think habitat went bust didn't they. It must just be the name I think being used as a range at home base......
This really depends on your budget. The best sofas made in England IMO are Wesley barrell, I haven't seen them mentioned yet. If you prefer modern designs, b&b Italia are lovely....

NorbertDentressangle · 12/05/2013 21:39

ah yes I came across Wesley Barrell earlier but was horrified by this - you don't think he comes with every sofa do you? Wink

Another quality British firm are Collins & Hayes . After months of sitting on showroom sofas I found these and having long legged tall family needed plenty of depth. They are still as comfortable as the day they were delivered. and since the company keep the patterns I can still get replacement loose covers (14 years on). In fact they still make the model we have.

Willdoitinaminute · 12/05/2013 21:53

NB plenty of stockists in West Mids including House of Frazer in brum a.though probably not cheapest.

JessieEssex · 12/05/2013 21:53

Parker Knoll have nice stuff - their website should say if there's a stockist near you. Also try Alstons?

RayofSun · 12/05/2013 21:55

We have 2 multiyork sofas. Going strong after 6 years and 2 jumpy kids!!

princesssmartypantss · 14/05/2013 21:02

sofas and stuff, we live near the showroom in Sussex but there are others which might be near you, lots of choice on style and almost endless options on fabrics. as per poster above, Collins and Hayes v good but full price v expensive, worth looking for them in furniture village as sometimes in sales!

DewDr0p · 19/05/2013 18:37

Delcor

wonkylegs · 19/05/2013 18:45

Avoid furniture village. Got a sofa from there and it snapped. It was a design fault (cheap timber spanned to long a length without support) but trying to get them to rectify it was a truly awful experience.
We eventually bought a replacement from multiyork which is fab but was very expensive.

kerryxx · 22/05/2013 15:51

Would you be able to get to Matlock in Derbyshire easily or is it too far away?

We are getting our sofas manufactured from a company there. You give them a design and they will make it for you. They have lots of books of fabrics and you choose your fabric.

He is coming in cheaper than John Lewis on the same style and they are making it themselves.
The quality is a million times better too.

They haven't really got a showroom any more, just a few sofas that you can sit on to get a feel of how firm or soft you want it.

HippoPottyMouth · 22/05/2013 15:52

Ikea

bonzo77 · 22/05/2013 15:59

Sofa.com. They're fab, you pick your design and your fabric. We went to a show room in London, not sure if there are others.

Iwantmybed · 25/05/2013 07:48

We're getting our next sofas from ikea. I rate the quality (and the price)

Yonilovesboni · 25/05/2013 07:57

Ponsfords at Sheffield. Very large showroom and excellent quality furniture.Wink

Rooble · 25/05/2013 07:59

Heals - excellent quality

pettyprudence · 27/05/2013 08:08

Bailey's home & garden only have 3 sofas but oh they are heaven to sit on!

Minifingers · 31/05/2013 09:10

Don't know the style of your house but I bought a hardwood framed mid century antique one off eBay, re-webbed it myself, refurbed the cushions and dyed the covers. It cost me £500, I spent £100 on refurbishing it and now have a beautiful sofa (looks like it should be in Elle Deco) I could resell for £1000. I always buy antique if I can because they retain or increase in value usually (not always). Build quality is better too. Ikea furniture (which I have 2) is worth half what you paid for it by the time you've got it home.

Mum2Pea · 31/05/2013 14:53

Be careful with sofa.com. We bought our sofas from them with the scotchguard.
We bought the removal covers which can be washed in the washing machine as we have young children
When they were stained, scotchguard sent out the cleaners but the colour ran on the material.
The cleaners claimed this is a regular occurrence with the brushed cotton from sofa.com and guardsman planned to stop covering them.
They said the suede type material is absolutely fine.
They also said had we washed the washable covers, the warranty would have been nullified!
TBF Sofa.com dealt with it and guardsman changed all our covers but took 18 months of arguments.
