Taking a baby back carrier into plane cabin

Hello- I've just bought a Deuter Kid Carrier 2 and am flying short haul with BA next week. My plan was to carry ds in this back carrier onto the plane, and put buggy in the hold. Now I'm worrying about the dimensions of carrier. Has anyone taken a back carrier on? Thanks for any advice! I keep throwing more and more money at the flying alone thing!

I would talk to BA asap as this type of item is not listed in their cabin luggage allowances.

How old is DS, I only ask this as you can take the buggy up to the entrance to the aircraft and then it is placed in the hold.

My guess too is that the back carrier may be a tight fit to get into an overhead locker; they may well tell you it will need to go into the hold as it takes up a lot of space in an overhead bin (even if you could get it in there unaided).

We took one on BA long haul to Australia, no problems. The biggest problem was having to remove the child from it at every X-ray point so it can go through the machine.

Ours wasn't as bulky as the Deuter appears to be but we had no queries about it and it fit into the locker ok.

Wouldn't it just fold up and you can pop it in your hand luggage? I've had a few different back carriers and none are bigger than a jumper when rolled or folded really. Shouldn't be too much trouble. I've never had to remove the child to go through X ray either but I don't think I've ever had one with metal clips. I found using them on the front during the flight useful, but you have to take them off for takeoff and landing.

Thanks all very much for your suggestions - I'm just a bit worried because the frame of back carrier is quite chunky. You're right, Attila, it might be a squeeze for the locker. DS is 10 months, and a big boy!! Buggy will be in a transport bag. I think I'm going to have to go with the flow.

Normality, the ones we're talking about have metal frames so they can stand up with the child in them as well. Couldn't roll it up if you tried.

Oh, I've never tried anything like that. Would seem an odd choice of carrier for travelling. I have a lovely back carrier that weighs under a pound.

I can't answer for short haul but having the frame is bloody lovely for long haul with a break at Bangkok or somewhere for upwards of 3 hours. Nice to be able to put the child down in effectively a comfy seat.

Thumbwitch - you're right about the frame. I wanted him to be comfy sitting around at the airport. Anyway, happy holidays to all and thanks again.
