daily budget self-catering hols - how much?

Hi

Just been talking to a friend and she was saying how she calculates that she will spend around £200 a day for her family of 4 on her self-catering holiday in turkey.

We are self-catering in Greence - same size family and I was thinking more along the lines of £100 per day - hopefully less some days. My friend pulled a face and said that she would have reached the £100 by mid-afternoon.

Am I out of touch? Unrealistic? What do other mumsnetters think about budget for similar summer hols self-catering? Interested to find out - I might need to save a bit harder for August .

I agree that it does depend on how much eating out you do. I can fully appreciate that it's not a proper holiday for lots of people if they still have to cook & clean!

We normally don't have breakfast & lunch out - but will spend around €10 per day on pastries & bread. If we are out for the day I'll usually make up a picnic. We might go to a creperie one day. We will have evening meal at a restaurant maybe twice and that will easily be €70 a go. Rest of the time we do Bbqs or takeaways mainly.

Apart from food costs there is not much else - we will probably spent about €100 on some form of entertainment - last year we did one trip to a small amusement park and one to a circus.

I think £100 per day is fine if you only eat out once a day...

An UPDATE!!

Well we easily managed to stick within £100 most days - had the occasional day where we seemed to throw money away on soft drinks, ices, snacks etc but overall we did ok.

We had quite a few days where we had main meal at lunchtime and this saved us and we bought waters, nibbles etc and kept them in apt so took them to beach with us. It can be done. There were 2 or 3 days when we manged on less than £50 so it balanced out well over the 2 weeks. Had a great time now thinking of oct half-term.

Anybody else got any updates on their holiday spending - good/bad - K

Hi Katie in the interests of mumsnet I kept a record!

We drove down to the south of France (inland Provence. Spending was as follows:

  • Fuel ?175
  • Supermarket shopping ?680
  • Eating out (lunch X 3, dinner X 1) ?450
  • Other spending (breakfasts, takeaways, campsite shopping etc) ?750

We are a family of 2 adults and 3 big DCs (15,12,10). It looks like we spent a lot but we werent extravagant though also not tight. We didnt sit drinking in cafes(whether wine or coffee). We bought a few presents for home, probably spent around a ?100 on this. We brought some wine home but only a few bottles.

We went to both Greece (Kos) and Turkey this year and we found both to be reasonable and about the same price. We never spent more than £100 a day for 4 of us at any time. I think it depends on how much you drink a lot of the time as alcohol really bumps the price up.

SuzieHomemaker · 09/09/2010 21:35

Nefret we find that soft drinks are the problem! DCs have hollow boots.

There was nothing I could really put my finger on to say that this or that was expensive. I think there has been general price inflation in France and add to that the weak pound.

Nefret · 10/09/2010 10:21

Yes, soft drinks are expensive too but luckily our youngest only likes water and my 6 year only gets one or two a day. I think it is very unfair when they cahrge so much for soft drinks.

Just looked at what we spent and between the euros we took with us & what we charged to our credit card I reckon it was around £850 for 10 days - not including petrol & tolls. So that was supermarket & campsite shopping, takeaways at the campsite, one meal out, one trip to a creperie, one theme park, ice creams & bicycle hire.

The exchange rate was better than last year so that helped.

And some of that supermarket shopping was wine to bring home with us!

I found this with 2014 prices for self catering trips to Europe if it helps and some recipes too. www.aph.com/community/blog/airport-parking/self-catering-holiday-survival-guide-2014/
