for the 2nd/3rd july.
Has to be within 2 hours of cardiff.
Not Manchester/Liverpool/London.

dh says everything in Bath is booked due to a music festival but thats where we'd like to go really.

Budget is about £100-£150 per night, would like to go somewhere nice where we can go out and eat in the evening, maybe a bit of shopping

TIA

what about staying in Bristol, you can easily drive up to Bath or even catch the train up, if accomodation is hard to find in Bath for those days?

Try www.mr&mrssmith.com

How about here?

Midsomer Norton is not much to write home about, but you're in a good location not far from Bath or Bristol.

BecauseImWorthIt · 16/06/2010 20:45

You can easily get into Bath (good bus service), and hotel has a - supposedly - good restaurant.

BecauseImWorthIt · 16/06/2010 20:47

And apologies to anyone who lives in MN!

PILs live there, and I'm always disappointed by the place when we visit. It feels like it should host so many lovely shops, bars, restaurants.

mosschops30 · 16/06/2010 20:52

no we're not that desparate to be in bath either we stay there or not. Bristol is too close to home.
Apparently dh tells me it was a different weekend he was talking about so can anyone recommed a bath hotel?
Have had a look at Mr&Mrs smith, unfortunately most of the places in suitable locations are £400 per night

Cotswold House is lovely

Would the thought of Birmingham fill you with horror ?? Great shopping and some fab restaurants (around Mailbox area). Hotel Du Vin and Malmaison are both lovely hotels and very central.

I like Bristol as well

janeite · 16/06/2010 20:56

Harogate is lovely and the Balmoral, as seen on Mr and Mrs Smith is very nice (and much cheaper than 400 per night!). I have no idea if it is a two hour's drive from Cardiff or not though.

Balmoral

Tillyscoutsmum · 16/06/2010 20:59

this place is great too Ludlow is more "pretty market town" shopping than big city, but it is lovely

mosschops30 · 16/06/2010 21:19

oooh i lurve the coltswold house, its lovely, but at £225 is out of the price range.
Where is Harrogate?
dh says nooooo to birmingham, i would though many fond memories of drunken nightts in good curry houses in birmingham

Have stayed at The Queensbury on a few occasions... tis lovely, and The Olive Tree is a nice restaurant too.

Alternatively Hotel du Vin in Cheltenham is nice... good shopping and restaurants. One of the best meals of my whole life was at Champignon Sauvage - here

Or... a bit further, but what about Malmaison in Oxford? But you will need to go for a superior room to get one that was part of the old prison - it comes highly recommended

mosschops30 · 16/06/2010 21:34

lurking i fancy cheltenham and have looked at the hotel du vin, but friends of ours went to cheltenham and said there wasnt much to do for 2 days and they were bored .
Do you disagree? To be honest they just like lots of shops. me and dh like pubs and restaurants, with just a touch of shopping
i looked at the mal in oxford but its full that weekend

So DH and I spent 2 days in Cheltenham... mooching round shops (and bars... and restaurants!) in Montpelier and had a great weekend. But then we didn't really want to 'do' much in the traditional sense... just chilling out with some wine and the papers in the bar at HdV was a great way to spend the afternoon - it's the simple things without DCs that we enjoy

And seriously... Champignon Sauvage... if you're into your food, it's well worth the money.

lurkingsnurker · 16/06/2010 21:43

How much? Crikey. We haven't paid anywhere near that when we've stayed there, but thinking about it, we have probably got it on laterooms or some such at the last minute.
