Why not consider Norway?

My Finnish friend says it is the most beautiful of the Scandinavian countries.

BingumyAndThob · 14/06/2010 23:49

Are you looking for city break type holiday or beach or mixture?
If you're hoping to hire a holiday home it's worth knowing that Swedes go back to school halfway through August, so last week is excellent for UK people hiring holiday places- half price or less in places like Skane at a time when it's expensive here (bank holiday week).

How old are your children? What do they like to do? Summer isn't cold in Sweden, but obviously not like Greece...

i dont really mind too much what kind of holiday dcs are 17,7 and 4, it would be nice to be able to get to the beach or a lake, but it cant be remote because we wont have transport and ds 17 will want a bit of life.we like eating out and museums etc with the odd relaxing beach day thrown in type holiday.its good to know about the school holidays thanks.I have tried googling scandinavian holidays but i cant find any clear guides on holiday type destinations, I am interested in norway as well, or denmark.

Check this out:

I give you a holiday of a lifetime beyond the arctic circle:

Destination Tromso

or this Lofoten

or coastal Fjord Cruises

Take your pick. Wild mountains, cycling, hiking, pristine beaches, rocks, rock climbing, abseiling, paragliding, windsurfing, fishing, sea fishing, river fishing, this could be your activity holiday of a life time! Or not, you dont have to do all this, you can just soak in the scenery, the peace and the calm.

Or escape to the beauty that is Sommarøy (summer island)

You can get cheap flights from low cost airline www.norwegian.com - your airport in the north is Tromso. You can have a city break in Oslo, 2 hours further south, by plane.

BingumyAndThob · 15/06/2010 14:55

Hey! What's with all the Norwegians poaching tourists on this thread?

frazzled- you want MrsMills for insider info- she lives I Sweden, I merely aspire to do so.

We are hopefully visiting later this year though, so I will share what I find out as and when if you like, though my DC are much younger than yours- eldest is 4.

QSincognitoErgoSum · 15/06/2010 17:59

I live here Bingummy....

Here school holidays is from mid june to mid august, so it will be quieter after the holiday season.

However, July is "public holiday season", so no roadworks, no building works, etc....

frazzled74 · 15/06/2010 19:33

norway and sweden both look lovely, please carry on with info.I think we probably need a larger town or city as a base, not too far from airport. i am going to have a proper look at those links this eve qsincognito, but they look really interesting, thanks,

We went to sweden last year for our summer holidays - it was fab and I would highly recommend it. There are lots of places on the fringes of the stockholm metropolitan area/ stockholm archipelago which are very accessible from the capital by public transport. I seem to remember Vaxholm as one such place when I was looking.

You could try looking at stugknuten.com for holiday rentals, or dess.se - I think it was through the latter that we got our place last year. It was on a boat-only accessible island though, so wouldn't necessarily recommend that particular place to you with your needs!

Highlander · 06/07/2010 14:07

there's camp sites (with holiday cabins) all over the place.

The one I fancied was a beach 'resort' (has a kids club) south of Malmo. Will check up....

vintage · 06/07/2010 14:14

in a totallly unconnected post would any of you lovely people in Sweden etc consider sending me Skona Hem magazine each month?(i`ll pay of course )Ive tried everywhere for stockists in the Uk

MrsMills · 06/07/2010 16:48

Just seen this, I'll try and offer some suggestions. Stockholm is my speciality though.

Cheap airlines, well Ryanair fly into Skavsta airport (about 75 kms south of Stockholm), and there is a great bus serive which gets you into the city centre. From Stockholm, you have access to the archipelago, which is just beautiful. There are daily boat services which take you out there, so you can pick your islands depending on what you want. Many of them offer camping or cottages (stuga), even the od hotel. more information on island hopping.

There isn't a great deal to do on these islands, but if peace quiet and relaxation are what you're after, then you have it in abundance. And it is beautiful, of course.

This is a good link for info on Stockholm.

BigumyandThob is quite right about the school holidays. July is the big holiday month here, lots of things are closed, and the city is tourist central, so August is a much better time to come.

Let me know if you want anything specific answered.

Vintage- CAT me

LadyPeterWimsey · 06/07/2010 16:59

I don't have any specific info because we went to Stockholm with a house swap - but I LOVED it. We were on an island very close in (commutable to the city) and it was beautiful and peaceful. And the archipelago was stunning. I've decided once the kids are off my hands that DH and I are going to learn to sail, and just head off into the islands.

moonmother · 06/07/2010 17:07

We are also looking into a long weekend break either in Sweden, Norway or Finland.

It will probably be the Autumn time, and just for Myself and Dp.

Any info would be great -

I've always wanted to visit Norway, and possibly see the Northern Lights , Dp likes Finland and both of us love the look of Sweden after becoming huge fans of the Swedish Wallander series. (we were very sad when it finished). So any of them would be good.

ChateauRouge · 07/07/2010 14:13

Highlander- any chance of a link to the holiday place S of malmo?

Highlander · 07/07/2010 17:18

Highlander · 07/07/2010 17:20
