Will it be too hot in August? is there a better greek island to go to- we want sandy beach, nice village/ small town and no fry ups!

which would be the most charming (ie not naff resorty type place) beach area to stay in?

can anyone recommend good self catering accomodation near to beach and good village/ small town?

thanks!

We stayed in Agia Efimia Kefalonia years ago pre Captain Correlli and adored it. There was a lovely taverna literally overlooking the sea.It wasn't a sandy beach I don't think(pre kids too) but it was a lovely tiny harbour town. Myrtos beach(not sandy either) was nearby,we hired a car and went on a boat thing(I still have all the sea urchin shells in my bathroom). We used to eat out for a fiver every night(bet you can't now). There was a nice hotel with a pool.

Assos??? is a very posh village/harbour which is lovely.

We can't wait to take our kids but I think it is too hot in Aug unless you are in a hotel with a pool and aircon. You will definitely need a pool or shady garden with a 2 min(no more) walk to a beach.

I've also been to Skaithos(sandy beaches aplenty),lovely town and loved it(I'm very fussy) but again it was years ago.

Thanks MilaMae- where is Skiathos? Do you think that would be too hot too?

I don't think it would if you had a pool and aircon. If you're in an apartment with no pool or aircon yes. I've stayed in Turkey in Aug and seen UK toddlers quite happy but it was in a hotel with a pool.

I think Greek islands are better as the heat is less intense being islands but walking anywhere for more than 2 mins would give you overheated cranky toddlers.

Keeping toddlers cool without a pool would be hard. The heat on the beaches is quite strong and shade very limited.

I think it was Skaithos town, loved the beach and the town,Banana beach(nickname)was gorgeous but further away I think.

No we stayed at Troulos and it was Troulos beach. The banana beach was Koukounaries. Now puzzled as to how my mates and I spent every evening in Skaithos town, must have walked.Skaithos town was beautiful back then in 1990. It was the sort of place you could get yog, nuts and honey very late at night tucked away down an alleyway, lots of lovely places to eat, nice safe authentic atmosphere, quite a few Italians.

Just googled it,want to go back now........

We never went to the Med in August, as the temperatures regularly seemed to top 40 degrees.

Even with air con, you would be trapped in the hotel/apartment for most of the day.

If you hire a car you also need to make sure it has air conditioning.

We always used to go in the May half term, and take a week out of school . We had several lovely holidays then - too late for this year, but perhaps for the future. I wish we'd done it more often tbh.

Why can't you go in September, if your DCs are toddlers? It'll be much nicer then, and less crowded too.

And cheaper too!! Cant believe the prices of hols in August. DS has just started nursery and as I go back to work soon, we need to go when the nursery closes for annual hols in Aug.

Looks like the Greek islands will be too hot! Cant seem to find anyehre the right temp- am starting to feel like Goldilocks looking for porridge!!

Any other suggestions for nice beaches in aug that wont be tooooo hot???? I seem so fussy,....

Cornwall

krisskross · 14/06/2010 13:41

At the risk of sounding Howard Hughes fussy- we are going to Dorset next week and dont want the risk of UK weather for both hols (didnt have any hols last year, hence 2 this year!).

It depends on your children whether it will be too hot or not. how do they cope if it is very hot at home? Are they very fair and do they burn easily?

I have been in Turkey in August with the children many times and they have been fine but they both cope with the heat fine and don't burn. We are taking them to a Greek Island and to Turkey this year in August. If it is very hot we will spend lots of time in the pool during the hottest part of the day and under the sahde of a nice restaurant form lunch. We will take them to the beach in the monring or late afternoon.

So if you think your children are ok in heat generally then go for it. Most islands have a nice breeze anyway so it wont be unberable.

Brittany will be the same as England.

What about Majorca?I was a bit snobby before I went but Deja in the North I think was lovely.

MilaMae · 14/06/2010 17:42

Would Portugal be cooler than Greece too?

spacedog · 14/06/2010 21:21

The northern greek islands will be ok, not too hot.

krisskross · 14/06/2010 21:34

Ok- so I am Howard Hughes fussy- I would be too nervous to go to Portugal (DH thinks I am bananas) and I've read lots of posts saying how lovely Majorca is, but its really really pricey and doesnt totally grab me.....

Nefret- thanks for tips re Turkey and Greece- our children are fair and burn....

you are looking at 40degree so unless your kids can adapt quickly to a siesta lifestyle its going to be too hot in Kefalonia.

liliputlady · 15/06/2010 10:59

Anwhere in Med will be baking in August, but Greece mega-baking I would say.
South of France?
Minorca lovely for toddlers.

krisskross · 15/06/2010 21:53

Thanks Liliputlady, anywhere in particular in Minorca?

Why would you be nervous going to Portugal?

krisskross · 15/06/2010 22:06

Madeleine Mcann......I know this is bonkers- that could have happened anywhere, but I know myself well enough to know I'd be checking the doors and windows and getting up in the night to check on them etc etc

Err, ok. You know a little boy called Ben was snatched in Greece a few years ago?

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 15/06/2010 22:15

That is bonkers, but if that is how you feel I wouldn't put yourself under (completely) unneccessary stress. I imagine all countries have had at least one abduction over the years though.

What about the Channel Islands? Nice but cooler than the med.

I wouldn't go in August if I had the option of going another month but it is the only time I have off work.
