I went to one eons ago pre kids, when I had a life, but I can't remember what it was called. I will try and remember - Linthwaite or something.

What kind of place are you looking for? Are you taking the kids?

I rather liked the Prince of Wales in Grasmere, where I stayed a night last week on biz. (It's not a business hotel though--not that there'd be many in the lakes!) There were loads of parents with kids, I noticed. This is unimportant, but I loved the breakfast buffet. . .one of the most yummy full English breakfasts I've ever had despite being warmed in those buffet pans. The hotel's not high high luxury, but quite lovely. Comfy rooms, nice views of grazing sheep or, I suppose, the lake, depending on where your window's located. Hotel website here . And lots of eccentric poet-y types across the road at the Wordsworth Trust.

Lakeside Hotel

Blu · 11/08/2005 14:12

For gorgeous hotels, fab views, seclusion and excellent cooking, Leeming House and Sharrow bay hotels on Ullswater have excellent reputations. Have been to both for dinner (ages ago) - really nice. Not your budget option.

The Belfield overlooks Lake Windermere at Bowness - its lovely

Ooh, Sharrow Bay used to be run by the campest pair of men I have EVER met. Really good food there though. How about near Coniston?

tortoiseshell · 11/08/2005 14:18

this one looks quite nice

misdee · 11/08/2005 14:19

brackenrigg the food is scrummy. dh wants to go back at some point, hopefully we'll be able to go next year.

anteater · 11/08/2005 14:46

Live nearly next door to the Brackenrigg, can be good, but equally can be dodgy, depends on how busy..

misdee · 11/08/2005 14:47

can it? it was july when we went, but was lovely.

anteater · 11/08/2005 15:01

Yes, we dont recomend it any more.
If anyone is in the lakes this month with children try and visit The Upfront Coffee shop and Gallery on a Wed, Sat or Sunday, Childrens puppet theatre 10.30am and 2.30pm, lovely food, Anteater Approved! 017684 84538..

Blu · 11/08/2005 15:04

Anteater - do you know 'seldom seen' in Glencoyne?

oliveoil · 11/08/2005 15:16

I think it is called The Linthwaite Hotel.

zubb · 11/08/2005 15:42

We stayed here -
whitewater
a few years ago - not sure what its like now. Its at the end of lake Windermere, but not a long drive from the town itself. It has a pool, and I had a great massage there. Food was good IIRC, and the room we were in had a lovely view over the water.

anteater · 11/08/2005 15:55

Sorry Blu, cant help, other end't o'lak!

Blu · 11/08/2005 16:01

Oh yes, Anteater - much too far away .

Anyway, it's called 'seldom seen' for a reason, so not many people do know it. It's a row of old tim miners cottages below Sheffield Pike, I know some of them are sometimes rented out, and I'm trying to find out how I can book one.
