We are yrs offon our hols this week and have ds1 (8 yrs) who'll be no prob, dd (4yrs) also no probs and ds2 (19months) who may be a nightmare

what can I take to keep him entertained? He has NO attention span whatsoever, the last time we took one of these flights a couple of years ago there were no tvs at all so there's no chance of that entertaining him at all, there's no way he'll sit on someone's knee for 4 hours at all....

can I take snacky items through airport security or will I have to buy them when we've been through security?

arrrgghhh when we booked this last year he was a lovely baby that would just sit in his buggy...now he is a little monster , I'm sure he'll ok on holiday it's just the flight that's keeping me awake at night

We flew 12 hours to the Maldives with DS1 (18 months then) last year and he's a bit of a nightmare as well. Very active and no attention span (not at their age anyway!). So 4 hours is a doodle (just think of those in worse situations!). We did a lot of walking up and down the aisles (I was scared he would try and take stuff off other people but he didn't, just liked looking at what everyone else is doing and people were giving him attention so that kept him entertained). He liked playing with the stupid plastic cups they gave out for drinks. My DS1 also didn't eat much during the flight but would snack so I brought mini cereal packs etc (but bring a container with a lid unless you want to spend the whole time bending up and down picking up cereal bits!). He also played with the remote/satellite phone on the plane. Just countdown in half hour blocks and you will be fine!

thanks

we took dd at the same age and she was fine but I think ds is a little more fiery than her...although I would have said she was a little madam back then

We are doing another long haul (12 hours, this time to Singapore) in August and DS1 will be 2.6 then and DS2 9 months old. Feel very very sorry for me. We are thinking of getting a portable DVD player (though there will be movies in demand but we thought if we brought the whole boxset of Peppa Pig along, there might be a slight chance of keeping DS1 quiet...) for DS1. I could stay on longer as currently on maternity and all my family is there but I cannot contemplate the thought of doing the return journey without DH!

BTW, DS1 is very challenging while DS2 is very laid back and chilled out so you always end up with one who is a right pain in the ass!

There's some good tips here for travelling with kids

Good luck, often it goes much better than we think, mainly because we're prepared for the worst.
