Hi, Am hoping for a cheap holiday without the faff of planes/taxes/transfers etc.

Has anyone driven to northern Spain? If so, can you tell me about it? Where you went, did you stop over on the way, any recommendations?

Ta x

before our son was born, we once drove the entire way back from spain to london, in one go, and all i would say is, never again. madness! 19 hours. DO break up the journey!

We live in southern Spain and drive back to the UK every summer. On the way up, we camp through France with our own tent. We stop for a couple of nights 5 times so do make it into a holiday too. That makes for about 4 hours of driving every other day. We then cross from northern France by ferry to the UK.

On the way back, we take the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao (sadly this crossing is coming to an end from Sept) and then drive home in one go (about 8 to 9 hours).

If you are going this summer and want to spend your holiday in northern Spain, I can definitely recommend the ferry. The crossing to Spain takes two nights (you leave 9pm and dock 8am 2 days later). The crossing back to the UK leaves at lunchtime and so is only one night though you dock in the evening. There's plenty to do on board for kids, including a small ball park, a swimming pool, an kids club (for a few hours), a games room, a cinema and plenty of restaurants and cafes.

We get the ferry from Plymouth to Santander and drive down to south east Spain most years - the crossing is approx 20 hours. We tend to stop outside of Madrid and do it in 2 trips. We've always found the roads/motorways in Spain really easy to navigate.

We've driven to northern spain camping, 2/3 stops thru france then spain, driving thru pyrenees is fantastic and very memorable. The northern part of costa brava is v nice and not Lloret de mar-ish at all.

Not cheap though, fuel/stops etc. Def get cheaper by going easyjet, being flexible wi dates and hiring private apartment

Hi

When we were younger (and children smaller) we drove down to Noja (campsite in Eurocamp brochure) on Atlantic coast of Spain. We then drove across Spain to Costa Brava. Wonderful drive, like driving across the moon.

Noja was marvellous, beach was empty and perfect. That was 10 year's ago so possibly different now.

Driving is marvellous - no matter what we always drive using tunnel.

It's an adventure, enjoy!

We live in Brittany and drove to my sister in laws house near Torovieja (sp) when DS1 was 4. It was OK, but you do need a stop (at least 1!) We stopped at Jaca just into the Spanish pyranees on the way down and in Andorra on the way back. Have to say much of the interior of Spain seemed quite boring. I'm sure there are interesting bits, but all we saw was arid wasteland for 100's & 100's of km - take some good CD's!!
