Haven't been yet but everyone who has been recommends it. We might go this year.

I don't think it's actually close to La Rochelle though - we go to the northern end of the Vendee and it's about an hour from there...

chimchar · 05/06/2010 09:16

thanks decor.

you're right...its nearer nantes....we're staying in meschers sur gironde...was hoping it wasn't too far...will have to look carefully.

looks brill, but a very long day with 3 kids...the nighttime show doesn't start until 10.30pm!

If we go I think we will just do the daytime bit. If you come across any deals on tickets let me know!

AgentProvocateur · 05/06/2010 10:37

Yeah, we went a couple of years ago and it was great. We didn't stay for the nighttime show, but we saw all of the daytime ones.

You'll probably find that the leaflets advertising it have a few euros off. It was dear but worth the money.

You really have to get there for it opening to be able to fit it all in. And it might be an idea if you keep the indoor one (which is nearest the entrance, so the one we went to first) till the middle of the day, because the outdoor ones get very, very hot.

it is fantastic!!!! You must go! It's worth a long drive!

Definately worth a visit! I went on a school trip with a primary school in France and they LOVED it.

It is a great day out, but split the daytime and night-time bits onto separate days.

The daytime parc is suitable for all ages and is one of the best family days out we've ever had. Five main shows, with lots of swordfights, horse riding tricks and special effects, then lots of smaller show and recreated villages.

The nightime show is amazing, a massive stage with thousands of actors and special effects, but I wouldn't recommend it if you've got little ones, it starts very late, and the action is quite a way from the audience so you need to watch carefully. It is spectacular though. Recommend you take a cushion and warm clothing, even on hot days it gets cool on the stands at night.

LIZS · 07/06/2010 15:47

Can get very busy and you need to plan the timing of your trip well if you want to see each spectacle. Falconry display is amazing as are the special effects. The commentary gets translated by radio headsets. Some of it is quite spooky though , dd (then just 7) was freaked out by one "ride" with hologram ghosty faces on suits of armour, very noisy and sinking floors to go underground - once you're in you can't get out early either ! Most of the attractions are out in the open so be prepared to get hot or wet , or both! Excellent day out but it is a fair drive (1 -1hr 30 from st Jean de Monts etc) from the coast.

I am drinking tea from my Puy du Fou mug as I type!
I took DS1 and 2 when they were 5 and 6 and they loved it. The day is very full-on, so I wouldn't bother with night show unless you DC are much older.
Agree with Lizs, you must study the timetable carefully to fit in all the shows.

It is great!

If you have any old radio's you can take them & tune into the translations rather than buying the headsets. (My friend did that last year and was grateful for the tip as it saves more money for ice creams).

I would love to go back again for the night show - we only did the day. Gladiators & birds were our favourite. DS also wanted to buy the "real" weapons on sale!

TennisFan · 07/06/2010 17:40

It looks fantastic - we were in the area last year on holidays but we couldn't afford the tickets

jennyftm · 13/06/2010 22:54

Hi there - thanks for the tip re: the radio. Will try that !
If you are going with Keycamp there is a 5Euro off per 2 adults offer which is in among the stuff they send you with your booking details etc - if you are arranging your holiday by email rather than post. They may send it with the postal version too.

However we got the brochure sent out from Puy du Foy via their website. It allows you to plan in advance the various ticket options. I have heard that you can spend two days there and certainly it might be good to go back to do the Cinescenie rather than do it all in one day. What do people think about that ? It is pretty expensive. Is it worth it to do it for two days or not ?
Thanks in advance.

(For good campsites in the Vendee try www.bestfrenchcampsites.com - we found La Garangeoire (1 hr 10mins away) and Bel at La Tranche Sur Mer (1 hr 25mins away) that way.
The Puy du Fou site is at www.puydufou.com/en#

We have been several times, we stay at a small campsite about 10 minutes away (Au Bois du Cey )and spend 2 days there as its such a good day out and we often want to see the shows more than once. You can get the translation head sets but they are not totally necessary as you can get the drift of the stories from the acting.

They have different timings of shows each day so make sure you pick up a programme on your way and plan your day round the show times. Be prepared to do quite a bit of walking and get to the individual shows early to get good seats.

All the shows are spectacular, although the indoor show the musketeers is a bit bizarre and if you are allergic to horses like me take your antihistmines.

If you wanted to see the night time show (Cinescenie) its not on every night so check before you go. Its in a different part of the park so you will have to buy separate tickets.

Also queues from the carpark are massive for the night time shows as everyone is leaving at the same time so you will neeed to factor that into your travel time.- Thats one of the reasons we stay close by. They recently opened a roman themed hotel on the site but dont know how much it costs to stay there.

They also do a evening battle of the donjon show with fireworks which is good its an extra though and you have to pay an additioal charge or it but - there is a themed meal and show -called battle of the drap d'or which if you book for the later sitting you can then stay on for the donjon evening show for a small additional cost.

Its totally fab and really well worth a trip.
