Hi, I am taking the DCs to the police museum tomorrow. Can anyone suggest anything else that's fun to do for 12 and 7 year olds? Thank you.

Oh my uncle works in the police musuem.

The science and industry musuem is a good one too.

Oh, thank you, mickylee, is it close by (close enough to walk to)?

Any good ideas for places to have lunch?

It is about a 15 minute slow walk. they have a great explore science area on the top floor plus an air musuem which is part of it over the road with real war planes to look at (not my cup of tea but kids like it)

As for lunch.. depends on what your DC like and your budget really.. top budget would be the Hilton, the highest building in manchester and cafe on the top floor so you can see all of the city up there (never actually been myself though) or if you all like chiense then a great buffet place called Buffet City near the police museum where in the day all you can eat for a fiver!! and loads to choose from.

The Chinese buffet sounds brilliant. So does the Hilton but too expensive!

I have looked at the science and industry museum website and it looks good although the hands-on part is apparently closed at the moment.

Thanks so much for responding. I was going to do a google search but it's much better to get someone's personal recommendations.

Sorry, ricepud, we crossed posts. I'm glad you think it's still worth going to the science and industry museum.

Any other suggestions, anyone? Thanks.

englishpatient when is your day out in manchester? have you been yet? let me know how you get on

Hi MickyLee, thanks for asking. We went on Wednesday. The police museum was excellent - we were shown round by a retired policeman (wonder if it was your uncle? He was really good) who talked about the different exhibits and was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. We saw the police cells and a reconstructed courtroom where some of the children there took part in a victorian trial mock-up. It was a really interesting morning.

Afterwards we ate at Bella Italia - the DCs' choice and it was very good - but we didn't go to any other museums as my DD had had enough walking by then (she broke a bone in her foot a couple of weeks ago so it is a bit painful and she has crutches).

We all had a very good time!
