I'll kick off with Southwold on the Suffolk coast, it's a lovely town with a long sandy beach and a pier. The stretch of water by the pier has a blue flag. The pier is a new one & is free to go on. The High Street is quite upmarket with gift and ladieswear shops. If you head out to the quay you can crab, we caught plenty.

The downside of Southwold is the price of holiday accommodation, nearly 1000 for a week in school holidays. It's worth staying up to 20 minutes away and driving in each day. We stayed north of Lowestoft so it took us quite a while to get there each day especially as you can only cross the water in two places in Lowestoft ane the traffice was terrible.

I wouldn't call it a holiday resort but I love Durdle Door

robinia · 08/08/2005 21:37

Bear ... beaches sound lovely - just what I imagined and the tennis courts might persuade him. But are there any other "attractions" close by - eg. castles, kiddie things etc.?

gingerbear · 08/08/2005 23:41

CD, what is grockely? Full of Grocks? Grockled to the Gunnels?
Explain please?

Gobbledigook · 08/08/2005 23:44

Falmouth
Swanage

Janh · 08/08/2005 23:52

Full of grockles, darling. (ie not-natives)

Janh · 08/08/2005 23:52

(I have a feeling grockle is SW for something like newt but couldn't swear to it...)

Janh · 08/08/2005 23:54

or maybe a dragon...

Merely means "summer visitors", allegedly. (Think it implies much worse these days!)

DelGirl · 08/08/2005 23:55

hi Janh . My sis has been to the Gower recently as her friends have a chalet there. She said on a sunny day, she didn't think there'd be anywhere in the world to beat it. Guess me and DD should head for there next year. Think Scotland is pretty stunning too, especially Loch and Loch Catrine

jayzmummy · 08/08/2005 23:56

Grockels is what them there visitors be called!

jayzmummy · 08/08/2005 23:58

and where I live is over run with them there Grocks!

Janh · 09/08/2005 00:00

Hi, DG!

The Gower is really stunning - there are so many beaches and they are all different, in such a small area it's weird.

Good surf too at quite a few - defo the place for you!

Look here - map and pics. We camped at Port Eynon 2 or 3 years ago and tried most of them out - really really fabulous.

gingerbear · 09/08/2005 00:45

Aha! So it be a west country term for unwanted summer visitors (like Northerners or wasps). Must disguise my accent next time I visit SW!! Would hate to be rumbled as a Grockle!

Pembrokeshire, especially the coast around St Davids and immediately north and south of it - heaven on earth, with huge beaches, coastal path walks and little inlets. It also has one of the most laid-back, child-friendly hotels I have ever stayed in (the Druidstone Hotel). I have been loathe to mention it on MN, for fear of its getting even more booked-up than it already is, but what the heck.

iota · 09/08/2005 13:29

we're off to Pembrokesghire on Thurs, OldieMum

OldieMum · 09/08/2005 13:30

Have a wonderful time. We were there a few weeks ago. The beaches at Whitesands Bay, Broad Haven and Barafundle are all wonderful.

iota · 09/08/2005 13:31

also love the New Forest/Bournmouth area

iota · 09/08/2005 13:32

OldieMum - -we went to Barafundle at half term - it was fab. - -we're staying in Broadhaven (N) this time

harpsichordcarrier · 10/08/2005 07:35

Mid West Wales coast - Aberaeron (rubbish beach but my daughter thinks its Balamory), New Quay, Tresaith, Aberporth.
Beautiful, unspoilt, friendly, lovely beaches, cheap!

mumtosomeone · 10/08/2005 07:39
