Anyone know of anything for kids to do in Calais
(other than trawling around hypermarkets)?

We are only doing a day trip, so won't be able to go too far.

Only the City of Europe which is the big shopping centre with lots of shops and all indoors. Can't think of anything for little ones.

Hopefully someone can

We go to Nausicaa at Boulogne - not far if you're taking the car. Would thoroughly recommend it. You should find more links through www.day-tripper.net

Who did you book it with unicorn and how much did it cost? (I'd like to do take my kids there for a day trip).

MaggieW · 08/08/2005 13:34

The beach? Haven't done it myself but am told there are some good sandy beaches near Calais. I'm sure there's an aquarium in the area too - again have heard it's worth a visit.

unicorn · 08/08/2005 13:56

thanks all...
Will look into thos suggestions...

kid.. haven't booked yet.. but day trip looks about 30 pound (for car plus 4 people)

Nausicaa (enormous Aquarium with sealions) at Boulogne (on the seafront with a carpark) if raining - if sunny, the beach at Wimereux (half-way between Calais and Boulogne - turn off dual carriageway towards Wimille).

Marina · 08/08/2005 14:08

If you don't want to venture too far the beach at Bleriot-Plage, on the outskirts of Calais, is not too bad either. Wimereux is nicer though.
Nausicaa is a smashing wet-weather destination and very accessible from the Calais side of Boulogne. If the weather perks up, the beach outside Nausicaa is delightful, with a cafe-bar, clean public loos and a small climbing-frame thingy.

I mentioned this on another thread today, but when we went on day trips we used to sometimes go to Wissant about 30mins down the coast from Calais - nice beach, can hire bikes etc. We used to stop at the hypermarket and pick up food for a picnic on the way past. Also Bleriot-Plage is very close to Calais as Marina mentioned. Up on the cliffs just near Bleriot plage there are some WW2 fortifications dotted around - bit smelly to go into, but fun to see. Also good for a picnic up there if you need to shelter from the wind.

why not stop over , there are lots of motel s that we stay in for £25 per night for all of us. formula 1 are a group that have lots . we often just pop over for the day, go to the amazing aquarium in boulogne its on seafront and have huge tanks of sharks/penguins/seals plus lots more and a hundred times better than anything i`ve been to in this country.

Eurotunnel day trips from £19 per car - someone else posted this earlier this summer. We were going to do it but can't now, at the time I looked there was plenty of space at £19. Folkestone, not Dover, but I guess it's worth it?

unicorn · 09/08/2005 10:59

ooh thats cheap, thanks janh... maybe we do that trip instead.

thanks all, some good suggestions here.

(we're only doing the day trip though, as we're booked on a chalet site nr Dover for the week)

booked it! - 19 pounds- great value....ta janh...

Now having never done Eurotunnel before.. are there any merits to checking in early?

Any other Eurotunnel tips?

Eurotunnel, take plenty of books, colouring pencils, snacks, etc to entertain the little ones - its gotta be the most boring way to cross the Channel (but vv quick - only 35 mins)

unicorn · 04/09/2005 19:42

Thanks all...

Janh.. brilliant price for tunnel crossing...
and Meggymoo.. we did go to Le Touquet.. it's lovely (got a bit lost on the way in tho!!) but we would love to do a week there sometime - do you know any good places to stay?

We also managed to fit in the essential 'booze' shop... so all in all, a good day!!!!

thanks to MN!
