Hi
The caravans are normally well equipped. Read the brochure/website in detail to see what you'll get so you dont duplicate. In addition here are our top tips:

  • If you arent using their bed linen remember that beds are normally a bit narrower than home.
  • Take a sharp knife - the ones they supply are normally blunt
  • Plan your route, book any overnight stops (otherwise plan to sleep in the car).
  • Plan to take a quick break every 2 hours without exception.
  • DVD players for children
  • Sat Nav is useful but dont depend on it
  • Get some good guidebooks/maps (we use michelin) for the area you are staying in and get out and explore.

Enjoy - it's a great way to holiday.

Useful tip from a MNetter last year. Pack everything in those large reusuable shopping bags - a la Ikea. They fit better in the car than suitcases and when you unpack at the other end, they just fold flat and can easily be stashed somewhere. There is not a lot of spare space in a mobile home....

Portofino · 01/06/2010 12:10

I always recommend Novotel hotels for overnight stops in France. Webiste

ADealingMummy · 05/06/2010 18:16

Portofino - we have a Novotel in Lyon booked.

oh possibly a silly question .. but should we invest in a little sun tent , or are there lots of shaded areas.

We always take a sun tent for the beach.

Other things I take are a tin opener (they do provide one but can be hard to use) and a pizza cutter (takeaway pizza place on site we go to)

Check re the pillow shape too - some places provide those square pillows and it's not easy to ram them into a standard pillow case!

Oh my word - i'd forgotten about the bed linen ! will we need a bed sheet , and duvet cover ?

we are just back from staying in a mobile home in Southern France (not Siblu). We used ikea bags for packing, like Portofino suggests, and we took our own sharp knives - a small one and a bread knife. We also took plastic plates and cups for our dd2 (3), our own tea towels (which were also used to wrap things while travelling), aluminium foil (1001 uses!) and pegs. What I have added to my packing list for next time is a bath mat, table cloth, and citronella candles.

For your journey, I recommend having lots of coins for the coffee machines at the services along the way .

DecorHate · 07/06/2010 09:30

Check if bed linen is provided - ours isn't so I take sleeping bags for dcs and top and bottom sheets for us (blankets are provided)

Portofino · 07/06/2010 10:07

You usually order bed linen when you book the holiday.... If you didn't you can maybe phone them, or take your own. Pegs is a good one. I need to start on my list for this year.....

We stayed in the Novotel at Lyon Nord last year. It was nice - food and wine good, and a nice little garden with swings etc. The pool was bloody freezing though!
