St.Malo in July

Zondra · 24/05/2010 13:26

We are off to St.Malo for the first time in July.
Decided on a holiday we could get to by ferry to avoid this ash cloud havoc.

Only thing that is niggling me now is how hot is it? Is it basically slightly better British weather?

Oh,& any other tips on this area or around are very welcome-especially restautant tips!

TIA

Weather in Brittany should be similar to Cornwall, or a little warmer - so generally warmer than the rest of the UK but with the occasional rainy/stormy day.

I haven't been to St Malo for years, but a friend runs a creperie in Cancale, on the other side of the peninsula - you'll probably be heading over there for the beaches or to see Mont St Michel. So I have to give his place a plug: Breizh Cafe is sort of a classic creperie with a stylish twist, very child friendly, and I think has won various awards. But most pancake places are good for children - you can order whatever combination of things on a pancake you want - so we seemed to end up eating in them every day when we were last in Brittany...

I was going to say Cancale too! We love it. Moules frites, oysters, Muscadet... ahhhh. We go every year. I've not been to Breizh Cafe but I know where it is. I'll stop by when I go back in August

If you go there, park in the big free car park, just off the main route to the town. It's well signposted. Then take a walk down to the harbour (where all the seafood places are, and Breizh Cafe). I wouldn't bother paying to park near the harbour, unless you have problems walking. It does get hot, but the walk in mainly shaded.

There's a karting place near Cancale, and Zoo Champrepus is good. Lots of other places, ummmmmm, DS and I really liked Alligator Bay (near Mont St Michel) but SIL and her DS weren't that impressed.

I really like Dinan. We got caught in a dreadful rainstorm there once, but hopped on this, which was fab.

St Malo itself is lovely, and the Grand Aquarium is good (particularly if it rains - which it does!).

If I think of anything else I'll let you know

Oh, heat. In July/August it doesn't seem much hotter than it is here (south west England). The last couple of years the weather has been a bit crap, tbh. Not that this really bothered us, and I think it was less crap than it was in England.

st mont michel - sorry might have got name wrong - the big old monastry thing in the sea is worth visiting - though very popular. we went earlish to miss crowds

ClaireDeLoon · 28/05/2010 16:30

We were near there late last August and it was red hot, so hopefully you'll get lovely weather. Hope you have a lovely time.

Mont St Michel is indeed lovely. It does get very, very busy so agree with dreaming - get there early (or maybe late, in the evening?).

Don't bother eating there though - stop off at Cancale for some oysters.

My db is director of tourism for Brittany and he's just sent me a link to their shiny new website - www.BrittanyTourism.com went live today! Should give you a few pointers Zondra!

Thank you for all the replies & tips!

Really appreciate it!

Think I'm off to buy some summery cardis & maybe an umbrella just to be on the safe side!
