Tips for shade at Glastonbury

lou4791 · 21/05/2010 17:03

Off to the Glastonbury festival next month with my family, including our 9 month baby. Trying to plan for all eventualities, and wonder if anyone has any tips for shading little ones from the sun when out and about? Obviously sun cream and hat, but what about an umbrella for shade or one of those little beach tents or something else? Any tips welcome. x

I have seen some little UV protected cots, for if your baby wants a sleep somewhere away from the tent - they are the sort that fold up into a flat shape but pop up into a cot with a roof.

Not sure where, though.

I think you are wise to be thinking ahead because it can be very, very hot and you might not be able to find shade right away.

Definitely pitch up in a shady place if possible, so at least your tent is sheltered...you could take some cheap parasols to put around the tent as well, to create a shaded crawling/playing area.

Sounds like fun but I would be worried about getting too involved in watching stuff and forgetting about the baby needing to rest etc!

There are also cheap windbreaks from camping shops, a few of those round the tent might make it safer if baby is crawling. The UV tents tend to be a bit cramped and prob not worth the hassle.

this kind of thing

Oh and if you have a back carrier thing, you can get them with a sun cover, too.

Depends whether you like or hate them, though - ours used to give me bad backache!

I wouldn't worry too much, it always pisses down on glasto weekend

Cogitoergosum · 21/05/2010 17:40

this is what you should be preparing for

lou4791 · 21/05/2010 21:39

ConDemNation- Thanks. I think my baby may be a bit big for the cot as he is big for his age, and it would need very dry ground to be of use- a rarity at glasto I think. The backpack thing is definitely worth looking into.
Cogitoergosum - Hehe. You're quite right. We're all prepared for rain and mud too. That pic did remind me how bad it can get. Easy to forget- bit like childbirth

Hi lou4791. Just crashing your thread to get tips as I'm going too with 7-month old dd. My first time in caravan and first time with child.

lou4791 · 27/05/2010 18:43

Hi Issy42 ,
Nice to hear from you. You must be as mad as me. Are you taking your own caravan or hiring one there? How are you planning to get your baby around? x

Hi Lou. Hiring - very expensive but no other holiday this year. Have sling and trying to find cheap pram that will cope. If not have a Mura but is very heavy so stumped if have to lift it. Are you in tent?

lou4791 · 28/05/2010 08:55

We have hired a caravan, and treating it as our main holiday too. The company we hired it from said there was another group with a baby. Maybe it's the same company and we'll be neighbours!
We have our normal 3 wheeler pushchair that takes up lots of room in the car, and I would prefer not to trash, but may be necessary,. Also have a couple of slings which are great, but get a bit achey after a while and offer no sun/ rain protection. Just have to see what the weather looks like a bit nearer the time I think. Toying with getting a secondhand back carrier with sun cover, but they are so heavy and expensive.

Maybe i'll see you there.x

Mine's with Tim Broddie. I've asked him to put van in family caravan field. With you on the back carrier. DD doesn't curently have enough control for one (she's 6mths now but was prem so more like 4-month old) but that may change in the next month. How are you coping with feeding. I'm thinking of getting one of those wean machine things.

lou4791 · 30/05/2010 12:47

Oh i don't think it's the same field. Shame. I'm baby led weaning. So much easier and makes more sense than the endless mushing I did with DS1. i would imagine that you're little one may be a while before she is ready if premmie. Sorry we won't be neighbours. May see you in the NCT tent!

That's a shame - although Tim is convinced that all hire caravans go in E17, which was labelled as family field last year. I'm very of your blw - dd had to be weaned early because of reflux but not ready to hold her own food yet - only holds her toys for a few seconds .
