Lake Como by train

We are thinking of going to Lake Como by train, and then going across to the south of France afterwards. We have been looking at an apartment in Argegno.

Does anyone have any experience of getting around Lake Como without a car - plenty seems to suggest that there are lots of ferries and buses, but I just wondered if anybody has first hand experience?

Thanks.

yes, 11 years ago, many many buses. But that was pre-children!

Ok thanks Cant - might have a rethink as have also read in a few reveiws that it can be very noisy at night so maybe not the best for small children.

ferry info

Ferries would be the easiest way to get across the lake. The train terminates in Como which is the town at the very bottom of the lake.

We were there last Sept but drove up to Bellagio on the eastern side of the lake, took a car ferry over to the other side and drove down the western leg back to the airport (Malpensa)

I did research getting from the airport to Bellagio on public transport (train from Malpensa to milan, switching halfway to train to Como and then ferries) but we were only there for 2 days so didn't want to fiddle around waiting for trains etc.

Roads around the lake have no pavements and driving quite scary, went 2 years ago for a wedding in Laglio on Lake Como, sod all to do for kids, lots of sheer drops everywhere, can't walk anywhere due to no pavements, I'd go elsewhere in Italy and go back in a few years for a romantic break!

The place is breathtaking.
