Just wondering. My dad is potentially stuck in Tenerife, his flight is tomorrow but today the airport is closed. He is not bothered about not being able to get back, but as he has no insurance (!!!) wnts to know who pays the accommodation bill. He's not at all bothered, but I know he will be stressed out tomorrow if it is closed so I'm just trying to get answers now, just in case.

Looking at ryanair's website it says:

"Passengers scheduled to fly on flights which have been cancelled are advised not to go to the airport, but instead change their flight bookings (or request refunds) on line"

But, the rules for compensations say,

"This notice contains important information about your rights established by European Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004 and applies to you if:
....you have presented yourself for check-in before the Check-In Deadline as specified by us in our General Conditions of Carriage or as otherwise advised to you"

So if he doesn't go to the airport he wont be voiding any compensation rules will he due to the bold part?

The compensation document also says,

"FLIGHT CANCELLATION
If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to the rights set out below except when:
....we can prove that the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances...safety and security reasons, weather disruption".

So is the Ash deemed to be one of these events?

The compensation offered if you fit the criteria is:

"3. RIGHT TO CARE
If you are involuntarily denied boarding or if your flight is cancelled or delayed by more than 2 hours, we will offer you, free of charge:
.....c) hotel accommodation in cases where a stay of one or more nights becomes necessary, or where a stay additional to that intended by you becomes necessary.... Where it is not feasible for Ryanair to arrange the care set out above, Ryanair will reimburse you for reasonable receipted expenses".

But if he doesn't go to the airport how will he find out about the hotel Ryanair will offer? He's trying to get hold of them but there is no answer.

Any advice oh wise ones other than get good insurance next time you pillok
