Taking a dog on ferry to France

We're regular campers in France, but not yet taken our 2 year old spaniel. Have had her vaccinated, and she has pet passport, but now the reality of the journey concerns me. We are close to Portsmouth, so prefer to use that port, but minimum journey time on one of the catamarans is 3.25 hours, and she'd be in car, with possibility of us being allowed to visit her if staff permit it. Worried how she'd cope, perhaps with car alarms going off, movement of ferry etc. Anyone else done it? Any tips? Should we have thought of this before spending vast amount on vaccinations and passport?!

Hi

We are from Northern Ireland but live in Germany, so we travel back & forward with animals, a cat & dog, 1 overnight boat, another 2 hour boat. We found that buying a soft kennel that pops up for the boot/back seat is great. Pop the dog in with a blanket & bowl of water, and it will sleep the whole ferry crossing. Just make sure the window is down a bit, and you will have a sticker to put on window to say the dog is in the car, the staff will check & if anything is wrong, you will be told. Just keep car alarm off. Dont worry about her coping, she will, but for you the first boat journey is the worst, but it will be fine. Just think how much fun she will have with you on holiday, much better than being left behind

There is a 2-hour cat crossing to Cherbourg IIRC - more driving the other side but nicer for the dog?

oh, sorry, that one's from Poole

Would driving to Folkestone for the tunnel be out of the question?
