Having a massive panic about a longhaul flight tomorrow - please reassure me it is all going to be fine!!

Going to NYC for the weekend just me and DH, leaving DD aged 2 with family. Panicing about the following
1)I'm going to be 28 weeks pregnant by the return journey - Delta say no need for certificate and no restrictions on pregnancy on their website - so will take mat notes, but don't need anything else, it will all be fine?
2)If we check in online and just take hand luggage getting to airport 2 hours before flights will be fine? LHR recommend 3 hours before longhaul, but this would involve dropping dd off at 5.30 to catch our 10am flight.
3) If I do check in online do we just go straight through security when we get to the airport? Haven't done online check-in before.
4)Hand luggage dimensions given by Delta are a bit smaller than standard, so panicing about that - need to go find a ruler to check our bags.

Haven't been on a plane for ages, really worried about getting it all wrong and missing the flight - never normally panic about travelling - darned pregnancy hormones.

If Delta say 28 weeks pg doesn't need a note, then you should believe them. I flew up to 32 weeks without a note - depends on the airline.

With online check-in I think you usually still have to go to a special airline counter just to show passports etc, but the queues are much shorter - but airlines may have different rules, I don't know about delta. I guess just read the instructions carefully when you go through the website?

Two hours should be fine, since it's not the weekend or peak holiday time. Just make sure you're not carrying anything that's going to delay you going through security, eg anything that could be seen as liquid/gel including make-up, unless it's under the 100ml rule and you have a plastic zip-loc bag to put it in for the security check.

Good idea to check dimensions with a tape measure.

You'll be fine. Enjoy it!

thank -you. Can't find a bloomin' tape measure..

The only issue I can see here is that they might not believe you are 28 weeks. I am well-built so my pregnancies weren't so obvious. On a flight to Canada when I was 24 weeks, I was fine but a lady in front of me in the queue who was 25 weeks was asked for a doctors letter cos she was built like a stick and looked Huuuuuuuuge!

If you take your notes with a clearly marked edd then surely you should be fine, though?

Make sure your insurance is good. But have fun!

Wonderstuff · 29/04/2010 10:34

We have insurance - which also states no need to inform them of pregnancy if no complications - Delta say no restrictions on pregnancy at all (just say won't refund tickets if you find you are unable to travel due to pg) so unless something totally unexpected happens and we have to change airline (can't imagine what would happen) shouldn't need a note.

Bags are small enough (phew)

This time tomorrow will be on the plane!

Now the chances of us both dying in some awful accident and leaving dd orphaned are slimmer than winning the lottery right? She will have a nice time with my mum and sil and won't forever be scared by me leaving her for three whole nights will she..

Check in online 24 hours before departure and print your boarding passes out. You can change your seat online so you may be lucky and get an emergency exit seat (but ask at the desk as well).
Take your boarding passes and passports to the fast bag drop (they still need to be checked and you have to check in your luggage).
That is all you need to do before security -as said no liquids over 100 ml(even half full bottles will be confiscated). You can get everything you need for the flight after security (not that you need much -a book?).
2 hours before the plane is due to depart is fine (usually).
They will tell you which gate to go to at check in and if you are worried there are places to sit/wait next to the gate so you do not have to stay in the main shopping/dining area.

Good point chippy - i's not 'no liquids over 100ml' but 'no containers over 100ml with liquid in them' even if it's only half-full.

Wonderstuff · 29/04/2010 10:39

Cool - thinking might not take any liquids - hotel will have all toilettries we need.

You can put them in the hold luggage no problem.

Wonderstuff · 29/04/2010 11:05

Not taking hold - only going for 2 nights.
