We did it years ago when it first opened - DH loved it I wasn't too bothered. IIRC the water wasn;t that deep and you had a lifejacket on.

Was a brilliant day and was worth the money.

mumoverseas · 29/04/2010 07:09

We've done it a few times and it is fab. Did it when DC1 were around 9 and 6 and they loved it. Went back the following year with my parents and they did it. My mum was in her 70's and a weak swimmer but she did it and I've never seen her smile as much as she did then. I was thinking recently I wished I could find the photos taken then as we lost her last year and it was the best smile ever.

It is very expensive but its a fabulous day and you also get (depending on which package you book) 7 or 14 days entry to Seaworld (and I think maybe Bush Gardens)

As notapizza says, the water is not that deep and you have to wear a lifejacket and of course there are several trainers in the water with you.
Make sure you book in advance though as it really does get book up.

We are going to Florida in October too but think we'll have to give it a miss this year as DC3 adn 4 a bit young.

This is the Discovery Cove link to their FAQ page:-

www.discoverycove.com/Plan/FAQ.aspx#gpi4

Would second the suggestion made to book this well in advance if you decide to visit.
A lifejacket is worn at all times and the water can be deep in some parts of Discovery Cove (details are on the above page)

Also all adults MUST show photo ID upon entry so if you have a photocard driving licence use that.

From their website:-
Wind-Away River (length) 1,600 feet Shallow 3 feet Deepest point 8 feet

Serenity Bay N/A Shallowest Point 0-1 feet Deepest point 4 feet

Tropical Reef N/A Shallow 0-1 feet Deepest point 12 feet

just had a look as the mention of it has got me thinking about going again. Its not cheap though is it? Maybe I should have stuck at just two kids

georgeclooneyfan · 29/04/2010 14:50

Thankyou everyone for your advice it does sound great and if you are flying all the way to the states from the UK then it is worthwhile even if it is expensive. Will have a look at those links you sent Attila the Meerkat thanks. It sounds like it would be an experience you wouldn't forget in a hurry.Hats off to your mum being in her 70's and doing it mumsoverseas. I am not a great swimmer myself not sure if I would do it and I'm 37.I hope you find your photo of your mum! Thanks again

This thread has made me really want to go and do it again now
DH (miserable old git) hates water, dolphins, parks etc (even more reason for me to go) but think I might get the kids to gang up on him and say we are going in memory of nannie
What dates are you going georgeclooneyfan? we are there from 25th Oct for 3 weeks (wanted to go on the 24th but the flights were 1,500 pounds more!)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 30/04/2010 07:49

We have done this too and it was fab. You pay for the whole day at discovery cove, there are pools of rays and fish to snorkel through, a sort of lazy river affair and a man made beach. You then have your slot with the dolphins which we only paid for the DC to do and got enormous pleasure watching. Ds must have been just 8 and dd 10. The children have to wear wetsuits because obviously the water with livestock in is cold! They have professional photgraphers taking pics of the children swimming with the dolphins which of course you want but they were incredibly expensive. All in all an amazing day but the most expensive day activity I think we have done!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 30/04/2010 08:06

Just looked again at our pics ..... Happy days!!

newpup · 30/04/2010 08:11

It is expensive but a totally fab day. DDs were 7 & 4 when we did it and they were fine although they are both strong swimmers and were then.

The cove is lovely and due to the restricted numbers not crowded!

Do not book it for the end of your holiday though as if there is a chance of a storm they will not let you swim with the dolphins and you have to rebook. This happened to my sil and because they did it on the last day of the holiday they missed out on the dolphin swim!

It was a great experience. The water is very cold though so opt for a wetsuit rather than a flotation vest, both are on offer. Otherwise you will be blue very quickly no matter how hot the day is!

Oh they take fabulous photos of you with the dolphins and it would be very hard to resist buying them so go prepared!

Have fun!

Mytholmroyd · 29/05/2010 15:40

We went earlier this month and it was a truly wonderful day (got a great deal of 199 dollars to swim with the dolphins - the website has different prices depending what day you go).

It was expensive but it was all so lovely that we didnt feel ripped off. Ask for the photos of the dolphin swim on a flash drive (75 dollars) because photographers go round the park all day taking photos and they will put all those photos on the memory stick at the end of the day at no extra charge when you pick it up. The photos were very good quality and we have some superb ones of the children with the dolphin (the expressions on their faces are wonderful) and in the aviary etc.

I would go again in a flash!

mumoverseas · 30/05/2010 13:36

wow, that sounds like a good price Mytholmryod. Did that include the 14 days at Seaworld/Bush Gardens?

Wottknott · 01/06/2010 15:13

Make up your own mind
Simply take 15 minutes and google "Swim with the dolphin (SWTD)"

What?s Wrong With Swimming With Dolphins?

Unfortunately, the commercial success of SWTD programs and the high profile of the larger facilities in the U.S. have spawned a legion of copycat operations around the world. These operations are the driving force behind a sharp rise in dolphin captures from the wild. Many of these new SWTD programs lack the necessary funds and staff to provide even the most basic care.

Untold numbers of dolphins die during the notoriously violent wild captures. These captures are carried out in secret, far from the public?s eye, so obtaining an accurate number of dolphins killed is impossible. What we do know is that for every dolphin successfully captured there is a high probability that another was injured or killed in the process. To the captivity industry, these losses are accepted as standard operating expenses, but if this information was printed on SWTD brochures, it is unlikely that any person who cares about dolphins would purchase a ticket.

Wottknott · 01/06/2010 15:17

I think it is disgusting to keep dolphins captive for our enjoyment.

Go to Scotland and see them in the wild.

Mytholmroyd · 02/06/2010 00:28

Yes, mumoverseas it included 14 days to either Seaworld/Busch Gardens or Aquatica - we went for the Seaworld option but did spend a day in Aquatica and it was fabulous - our small children loved Roa's Rapids - a far from lazy river!

I hear you Wottknott - point taken. I did not realise these places were so widespread - obvious really in hindsight. I went to Discovery Cove because I didn't know anywhere else to go and I thought being in the US it would be highly regulated (given their harsh penalties for interacting with wild animals in the wild). I hold my hand up - my only excuse is that whilst making my monthly contribution to the WDCS and the WWF it is something I have dreamt of for decades.

Most of the staff I spoke to at Discovery Cove were animal pyschologists/behavourists and clearly highly educated and we were told from the start that the dolphins would only come over if they chose to. I saw no hint of compulsion.

But, yes, the possibility that they may never swim in the open seas is disquieting. But there are valid reasons sometimes why dolphins and other marine mammals are in temporary capitivity and I do believe that some marine mammals actively seek/welcome contact with humans.

Unfortunately, not everyone in the world is compassionate towards wildlife and on balance I think places where people are educated about other inhabitants of the earth can serve a purpose (although I realise the people who go to these places are probably self selecting).

Meglet · 02/06/2010 00:31

FGS please don't swim with dolpins . It only encourages them being kept captive.

I don't have to meet a dolphin / tiger / panda to know the natural environment needs looking after.

mortifiedmother · 02/06/2010 12:56

so presumably some of the posters on here never take their children to the zoo, or the circus?

Do they have pet goldfish? They are in captivity too.

Wottknott · 02/06/2010 19:59

Swim with dolphin attraction how to save money and more...

mortifiedmother · 02/06/2010 20:11

yawn. go and start your own thread on animal rights rather than hijacking a holiday thread

Wottknott · 02/06/2010 20:13

no

Wottknott · 02/06/2010 20:26

countrybump is a trained marine mammal medic - who posted the link below on this thread last year and you can see read countrybump's views too if you want to, or not, and go on pretending it;s all OK, 'cause it will be lovely for the children to swim with the happy dolphins.

Can't you be more imaginative and do something else on holiday?
