Changing the guard - any tips?

Want to go some time this summer to watch the Changing of the guard. Will probably go on a Sunday, although may go on a Monday morning. Is it better to go to the one in Horse Guards or the Palace? How far in advance should I get there? And where do you stand to see the one in horse guards? I have an 18 mnth DS so want to make sure he gets a good view but don't want to hang about for ages beforehand.

Any tips gratefully received.

We went last Sept with DS 3.2. It was and not very interesting - but you felt it was something you had too see!!?? Check the website - its not on everyday. Get there 30 mins early and push your pushchair up to the railings - get yourself a space - it will fill in behind you quickly - no escape for the loo!!Go to Buckingham Palace Road (left hand side looking to palace) on the corner. You can see across to Birdcage walk (behind your right) and see/hear them coming across. Also you can see the guard forming in the corner of the courtyard to march to the front. After the marching bit they do this wheel where they march to all corners of the courtyard with the flag, so you will get to see them. It was sad that the band didnt march but just stayed centre front - would have liked to see more of them. Afterwards walk up right of Mall next to St James park and you will catch them right next to the kerb marching back to barracks - excellent for a photo opportunity. I do wonder if 18m is a little too young?? Perhaps better to go to Horseguards Parade/Whitehall to see them on centary duty on foot/horse back - to 'see a solider'?? Hope this helps?

Thank you, yes we quite often go to St James' park so will take him to see the soldiers there first, may leave the ceremony till he is a bit older.

We went with friends when DC were about 7 and 9. It was a bit boring, but as it was a nice sunny morning, we had a good time and went for an ice-cream nearby

It can get very crowded, so I recommend getting there at least half an hour before. Otherwise you'll be stuck behind tons of people and the little ones will have to be up on shoulders. Having said that, it was a worthwhile outing. My DS liked when the guards marched right past us on the Mall towards the barracks. By the Mall could see them up closer than if we'd hanged in front of the Palace.
