What are 'reasonable expenses' to claim from an airline?

Last week I was caught up in the travel delays associated with the Volcanic eruption. I am putting together a claim from Ryan Air but don't know what to claim for. What are "reasonable expenses". Any tips would be appreciated.

I'd say hotel accommodation, possibly taxi fares if you got to the airport and were turned away and may be some meals.

Where were you and what did you spend that you wouldn't have if you got home on time?

I feel for the airlines as I think people (not you!) are going to get greedy.

The problem i have is that we were in an expensive hotel and stayed on there. I dont expect to get the whole bill back but on a sample letter i downloaded i am expected to specify a figure to claim. We were in sw france and also have quite a figure to claim in food bills! Were there an extra 6 nights. We did start supermarket shopping instead of eating out every meal etc but it all adds up!

as it's ryanair I think you should try to screw them for as much as you can get out of them, given they have a habbit of screwing over their customers on a regular basis. So I would claim for everything you spent during the six days.

I wouldn't say the same of other airlines - just ryanair.

Maybe i should just put the lot in and see what they say. I wont hold my breath for much though.

Ryanair have said they will pay up to a 3* hotel (after saying they would pay nothing), don't know what you were staying in but I would claim for the full amount.

IN the mean time find out the cost of a 3* hotel in the area so that if Ryanair decline as unreasonable you have evidence of what would have been reasonable.

Or you could argue that all other hotels were full due to the disruption and that was the only one you could stay in.

I would put in the full amount, did you keep the receipts? if so send copies of those (keep the originals and copies of everything you send and jot down who at Ryanair you spoke to on the phone and when etc)

If it was me I would leave Ryanair to make the decision on what to pay - I would not make the decsion for them.

They may surprise you and pay out in full :0 but (and this is speculation) they may also decide to pay out a percentage of each claim so the more you claim the better - so long as it is reasonable (and the receipts should prove you actually incurred the cost)

And you are only asking for your costs back I guess, you are not asking for compensation for inconvenience.

I also understand some insurers are paying out so if you had travel insurance then you may be able to claim.

I have prepared a letter to put the lot in to see what they come back with. I agree boxey i'm not trying to do anything other than claim a few costs back. Problem is some people will get greedy. I didn't keep all the receipts but the ones i have add upto about €300 plus the hotel bill.

I managed to get thru to the travel insurance company and it looks like they'll pay a set amount that works out the equivalent of one night in our hotel so better than nothing.

I doubt we could have got a suitable room elsewhere as the french school hols started the weekend of the closures.
