Dh and I are flying with Virgin to Las Vegas on Tuesday its our belated Honeymoon (we married 2 years ago, and baby no 3 came along!)
We are spending the week in the Wynn hotel!

Any reccomendations on places to see, eat, things to do? I'm just so excited!

That volcano better stay quiet!

Go to the Grand Canyon - it is bloody fabulous. We used a tour company (booked through our hotel) and we travelled in a 4 x 4 type of vehicle with some other passengers - easier than doing all the driving yourself as some of the road leading into the Canyon is not made up.

See a Cirque de Soleil show - they are very good.

We saw Green Day play at the Mandalay Bay whilst we were there in August.

The buffets in the hotels are really really good value, remember to take your ID though as I was asked for it when trying to order a beer with my meal!

Texas de Brazil in Town Square, just off the Strip is lovely as is Cadillac Ranch in Town Square

The "Strip" is miles and miles and miles long... don't underestimate how far it is between hotels.

It gets hotter towards tea time and upwards.

When the plane starts to descend it can be very bumpy due to the rising heat... might be an idea to have the sick bags at the ready - theere were lots of people on our flight (DS1 & 2 included) who were not well.

There is probably loads more.. but all I can say is it was one of our best holidays and we are looking forward to going back at some stage.

The Grand Canyon's pretty far from Vegas.

I only went before I had kids, as I lived in Denver and used to get cheap flights there.

Plus, my friend's daughter lived in Henderson so we used to go there for the weekend pretty often.

So my experiences are all of shopping, going to clubs, pretty expensive shows and drinking quite a bit .

The malls are open till midnight!

And you can smoke indoors in a lot of places still.

bellavita · 23/04/2010 18:59

OMG how can I forget the Fountains at the Bellagio - what a performance. You must see this. The lake is huuuuuuuge and the fountains play to music, it came on about 8pm on an evening whilst we were there and on the half hour I think thereafter.

The Gondola rides in the Venetian looked to die for but for four of us was a little expensive.

bellavita · 23/04/2010 19:00

Expat - it was about an 11 hour trip all told - but we had a fabulous tour man and a lovely air conditioned vehicle to sit in. The rim walk is a must.

blametheparents · 23/04/2010 19:02

I really liked the casino at the Hard Rock Hotel when I was there.

bellavita · 23/04/2010 19:03

You can even gamble in the pharmacies!

expatinscotland · 23/04/2010 19:22

I used to smoke cigarettes so for me it was like paradise .

notyummy · 23/04/2010 19:30

We stayed at the Wynn! Take a helicopter trip to see the canyon - amazing views without the long drive over featureless terrain - you fly over the hoover dam etc.

Walk up and down the strip at lot and go into all the other hotels for a gawk - this also doubles as exercise to avoid piling on the pounds.

Ask for a room on a high floor at the Wynn as the view is immense.

When we were at the Wynn Avenue Q was showing at the theatre there and it was great.

Will see if I can think of anything else...

izzybiz · 23/04/2010 22:12

Thanks everyone it all sounds amazing!
I really want to go see the Grand Canyon, seems wrong not to, but Dh thinks it will be too much of a trip I think he doesn't want to miss a days gambling!

We have requested a high floor in the hotel, the view over the golf course is supposed to be beautiful, Dh and I would rather be looking over the strip!

I will definately be dragging him shopping, I am trying to get him to buy me a Tiffany bracelet as a honeymoon present

Its my birthday while we are there so I think we are going to try and see Le Reve in the hotel.

Oh I am getting so excited now (as you can probably tell!)

View over the Strip is better - snow capped mountains in the background when we were there!

IIRC the helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon only took around half a day, from leaving the hotel to being back. TBH I really think it is madness to go there and NOT see it - one of the natural wonders of the world and all that. If you come back without seeing it, people will be and .

There are casinos in the UK if he's that keen on gambling all day long - but frankly the Lake District doesn't quite match up to the Grand Canyon!

bellavita · 23/04/2010 22:49

You would be mad not to do the Grand Canyon. I think for the four of us it was around £550.

Alibobster · 23/04/2010 22:59

Night flight over the strip is brilliant as is the Fashion Show Mall which is just acros road from the Wynn (if I remember correctly) Have a fantastic holiday

Hulababy · 23/04/2010 23:02

Have a fab time and come back and update.

Me, DH and 8y DD are off to Vegas at the end of Msy for a week. My sister and her boyfriend are getting married over there and DD is bridesmaid, so a few of my family are going to.

We are staying in the Luxor.

DH is planning on going to the Grand Canyon with my dad. Noone is getting me in a helicopter or small plane, so me and DD will find an alternative for that day - with my mum.

Please come back and tell me all about it!

PlumBumMum · 23/04/2010 23:06

I went to Vegas 10 years ago for my honey moon, and again 2 yeas later, I LOVE it!!!!!

Just enjoy, definitely take ID if you look anyway young, I got fed up getting asked(now they would probably be throwing drinks at me)

As notyummy said walk up the strip and in out of hotels you will be like this the whole time

you will love it!!

Oh and bring lots of money!!

chaostrulyreigns · 23/04/2010 23:06

My only suggestion is put your entire life savings on 33.

Then cross your fingers.

PlumBumMum · 23/04/2010 23:11

Hulababy children aren't allowed on the casino floor, dd1 was sleeping in her pram and dh was told she couldn't be on the casino floor, but there is loads for her to see and do,
just giving you prior warning, the second time we went we staed in the Excalibar and dd1 went on for ages how we stayed in a castle again

Hulababy · 23/04/2010 23:12

Thanks for reminder PlumBumMum; been warned about staying on the right colour strip of carpet with DD in tow.

SuSylvester · 23/04/2010 23:12

dh has been before and is going in a couple of weeks
the only place he has ever been offered a hooker by a taxi driver, he said recently

HTH

realfreedom · 23/04/2010 23:14

We got married at Bellagio, had our first dance in front of those fountains. Would highly recommend touring the Bellagio resort, Jean Phillipe's (master chocolatier/pastry chef - did our cake, it was fab!) is in the Bellagio, you'll know it by giant chocolate fountains. Cirque is great. There's a cigar bar if you like that and the spa/salon is one of the most wonderful experiences on earth.

Definitely walk the strip & do the helicopter tour of Hoover Dam/Grand Canyon/Lake Mead/etc. You can get one tour where you have champagne & snacks at the bottom of the Canyon - spectacular.

Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay is something different to do if you're interested.

The driving is horrendous, but there are limo services everywhere and they know all the ins and outs.

Have a WONDERFUL time, it is the best! We are going back every 5 years and it's too long in between!!!

HinnyPet · 23/04/2010 23:28

Grand Canyon by coach is a long day but you see LOADS, like the Hoover dam and blasting sites! The commentary is great and the scenery as you drive by is lovely. Changing coaches halfway through is quite funny too.

The grand canyon is frigging awesome, unbelievable, we did horse riding, pretended to be cowboys, the skywalk I chickened out of but I WISH I'd gone on it. The canyon itself is so amazing, and tbh I'm glad we didn't go on the helicopter as the day would have been over too quickly.

Buffet breakfast at Mirage on a Sunday was $30 with unlimited champagne. Ooh yes...also try to see the Bare bar there.....

Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian (awesome hotel) was great!

New York New York midnight meal was an experience.

Buy a USA sim card when you get there, will save you lots of money off hotel phone bills.

The flicky-flicky men are really annoying but just ignore them.

Take antibacterial strepsils to suck when walking through smokey, dry, stuffy casinos!

I wouldn't go again but glad we visited.

bellavita · 24/04/2010 07:48

Oooh yes, I had forgotten about the walkways through the hotels when you have children...

DH needed the loo and we waited for him only to get moved on by a waitress!

The pimps on the street are a bit of a nuisance. These are men and women (some of the woman are like errr great grandma age). The stand in lines down the walkways and when you walk past they sort of flick cards at you (not literally at you) but a bit like clicking fingers.

Drink lots of water - it will be hot.

izzybiz · 24/04/2010 08:01

at Chaos and Su!

The children will be no problem, they are staying at home with my mum!

All these ideas are fantastic thanks, I will talk to Dh regarding Grand Canyon again, I think I will really regret it if I don't go...

I will take ID out with me, just in case, you know..

Try and book La Reve in advance of your flight to Vegas as these shows are popular and can sell out.

Ignore the shills.

Do visit the Forum shops at Caesars Palace (re lunch Spagos is recommended and the Cheesecake factory in that mall is also well worth a visit).

Do visit the Grand Canyon; has to be done really. We took a Hummer tour into the desert when we were last in LV and it was great fun.

Do let UK credit card company know of your travel plans, this is because your credit cards could have a "stop" marker placed on them otherwise.

Buy a phonecard from somewhere like CVS pharmacy to use on your phone in the room as this will be a lot cheaper than using the hotel phone to call the UK (which will cost you a small fortune). Using your mobile phone in the US to call the UK can also cost a small fortune so be wary of using this.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 24/04/2010 08:07

Photo ID (if you have a photocard driving licence carry this around with you rather than your passport) is also hanly for making credit card purchases. You could well be asked for such id if making a large sum purchase.

HinnyPet · 24/04/2010 09:18

Don't forget to visit freemont street (I think that was what it was called) they have this television screen that stretches the entire length of the roof, they play music videos etc and it's awesome.
That's where the Vegas Cowboy and Cowgirl in neon signs are.
