Singapore airlines and 25 weeks pregnant

Hello

We're off to Singapore with Singapore Airlines for just over a week and am about 25 weeks pregnant. Have had a look at the rules for expectant mums and they require a letter from the dr. not more than 3 days before departure. This is fine for when we leave to go over but what about the return flight? The GP here will only provide the letter for when we leave.

Would I be expected to go and see a dr. over there just before we leave so that I can get a letter to fly? It seems a bit OTT as we're only going about about 8 days!

Has anyone had experience with this?

Thanks!

Hi miragefr - it does seem unusual to request this for all expectant mothers - is normally only after 28 weeks. But I just had a look at the website, and they only require a separate letter for the return journey if there is more than a month between your outgoing and return flight. So you should be fine with your GP one if you are only going for 8 days.

HTH

Oops sorry got that wrong, it's more than a month between booking and departure. But no sign that you would need to get another one for the return trip.

Here's the link:

Hi ApuskiDusky,
True - no mention of 'return' flight - though 'departure' could mean 'departure' when leaving for holidays and also 'departure' when returning for holidays! I might just be too anal but it's not really clear on the website is it?

Oops - I mean 'returning from holidays' not 'for holidays'!

I'd just give them a ring tomorrow to check if I were you. The people on the SIA helpline have always been incredibly polite and helpful when I've rung.

I would say you can use the same note as it asks for it to be from your attending gynaecologist and if you book less than a month before you leave then the note would apply from then.

Hi Olihan, I called today and was told that I needed 2 notes - one for the outgoing flight and another one for the ingoing flight! They suggested that I visit a doctor while I was in Singapore to obtain the second note! Seems a bit OTT for 8 days. Plus the dr over there won't know my medical history so I hope I won't have to do lots of tests just to get a letter to get back!

, a bit of overcaution there, I think but then, that's the Singaporeans for you! Glad you got it confirmed, have a fab time there, I've been several times and it's amazing.

Missus84 · 24/04/2010 19:51

How pregnant do you look? I'd just wear something baggy and keep quiet.

miragefr · 26/04/2010 19:32

Thanks Olihan. Looking forward to it. Missus84 - hmm - pregnant enough but am going to try wearing something baggy to the airport and sucking the gut in anyway!

miragefr if you see this can you tell me what happened with the letter on your way home?

I will be 23 weeks pg when we go to Singapore and double bummer as we'll be on hols in Perth for the 3 weeks beforehand, I'm going to have to pay to see a doctor in Aus to issue the certificate to get in!

Any advice grateful!

miragefr · 12/06/2010 20:14

Hi PDR.
I did end up paying to see a dr and getting a letter on the Singapore side after speaking to Singapore airlines a couple of times (just wanted to speak to 2 different people to make sure that they had the same story) - I was a bit paranoid about getting stuck out there!

In the end however, I don't think anyone even noticed that I was pregnant, and if they did - no one even asked me for the letter - both ways!!! So if you're not really showing and no one asks you for the letter on the way out, you'd probably get away with it not having the letter for the return trip.

Thanks so much for the reply miragefr!

I have emailed SIA to get it in writing and they do say I will need to get a letter from a doctor (midwife not good enough!) in Perth but probably not Singapore again as I'm there for such a short time.

I have to email them back my travel dates and confirmation number so I guess they'll make a note on my reservation that I'm pg.

At least I'll have it in writing. What a pain as I'll only be 23 weeks or so, so well within the limits.

I bet loads of pregnant women flying with SIA have problems with this though!!!!

PDR · 13/06/2010 19:27

miragefr I don't suppose you have the details of the doctor you saw do you? Rather go to one someone can reccommend than pick one out of a hat!

miragefr · 13/06/2010 20:38

Hmmm...I suppose if you send SIA your confirmation details, they'll probably note it hence - you'd probably need the letters.

For the outgoing letter I just got one from my local GP. Coming back, I went to this place in Singapore as it was just around the corner from where we were staying.

Good luck!

Thank you miragefr - yes I think SIA will black-list me as pregnant so I better do everything by the book!

I will go to the same place as you - looks great and my friend in Perth has recently given birth so she can recommend someone in Aus.

What a faff! Flight better be worth it!!!!

PDR · 30/08/2010 16:46

Hey if anyone else is in the same situation I have now got it in writing that I do not need another letter issued whilst I am away - the original one obtained within 3 days of departure will do.

Had been told various different things on the phone so EMAIL them and get it in writing and take it with you so you have some back-up if they ask!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
