We are planning to go up to Orkney this summer. We will be driving up and not sure how best to get up to the islands or how to get around when we get there.

Anyone done this - we want to see the wildlife, archaeology and do any child-friendly walks/climbs?

Mum is going to Orkney this year - she's been before with my dsis and dbil, and loved it. As far as I know, there is a ferry across from the mainland, though I am not sure where it departs from - dh may know when he gets home.

If you stop over in Glasgow, there are some lovely places to visit - the Kelvingrove museum and gallery is very child friendly - it's not a quiet, hushed museum - there always seem to be plenty of children there.

We are just outside Glasgow - near Paisley.

Darnit - I meant to say that I'll ask my mum if she has any info on Ornkey, and what do do there, or if she knows where to find it.

There's a reasonable bus service I believe, but if you're driving up, you might as well take the car over. The pentland ferry crossing is the quickest. North link ferries do crossings from Scrabster, and a longer one from Aberdeen

After that it depends whether you're staying mainland, or if you're off to the other islands. Check out orkney ferries for more detail.

As for archaelogy, can really recommend the Broch of Gurness as it is a bit more expansive with plenty of space for kids to climb and wander about; historic scotland has lots of detail
