Is it true that BA could be heading for bankruptcy as a result of the volcanic ash?...and also a question about the best travel insurance.

Just after some advice really, after saving like mad I booked a holiday at the start of the year flying with BA to Florida this summer.

Now for a while it looked like our main worry was BA strike action, now there is the volcanic ash, and now I have heard talk of BA going under as a result.

I have spent so much on this holiday, car, villa and park tickets are all paid for.

So, I keep meaning to get round to booking insurance, just wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to where would be the best place to get it from.

So that if the worst does happen all might not be lost. TIA

I doubt they will insure you against ether the strike or the ash or BA going bust for a pre-booked holiday, sorry

I know that the ash is "an act of god/nature" and insurance wouldn't pay out.

But I think you can insure against strike action and airlines going bust. protectmyholiday.com looks like it does, so there must also be others. I'm also sure I read a thread recently about an insurance company protecting against the BA strikes as long as no strike was announced on the dates of travel at time of booking.

I just want to try to minimise the chances of us losing over £10k if possible.

As Katymac says - you'll struggle to get insurance that covers you for the ash now. Strikes you may manage - Direct Line do some that covers industrial action as long as you have bought it before the strike dates are announced. If you pay by credit card, you have some extra protection, as you can claim from the credit card company if the service you buy doesn't materialise.

I think it's unlikely you would get insurance against BA, or any airline for that matter, going bust at this point, tbh.

At this point the losses sustained by airlines are well known and it's unlikely any company will insure against that risk.

www.protectmyholiday.com still seem to be doing it. They are quoting at £5 pp when I put in our holiday details, so it might be worth a try anyway.

Then I just need to get insurance for the rest of the trip. I'll check out direct line, thanks for that suggestion.

Direct line is looking good, thanks, it also says it will insure against liquidation

this article says that BA and other airlines do have resources to survive this financially but are requesting aid all the same.
I would be optimistic that BA would survive long enough for you to have a lovely holiday.

BA is sitting on a 4bn cash pile but have still requested a banking style bail out from the govt.

If you have booked a package it should be covered by ATOL

Thanks all for your posts, after having a mild panic last night, i have decided to just get a grip!

I have travel insurance with my bank account so I will just leave it at that and hope for the best.

It was all booked seperately over the internet (flights, villa, park tickets and car hire) flights were booked on a credit card, so hoping there would be at least some cover there if the worst were to happen.
