London Weland Centre with toddler and 92 yr old - good idea?

My 92 yr old Nan lives very close to the London Wetland Centre but has never been. Usually we take her on trips to Hampton Court, Richmond Park etc but thought we might brave the wetland centre next weekend. My Nan will need a wheelchair and is virtually blind and deaf. I will also have my 19 month DD in tow. Luckily DH will also be with me, I can't manage them both on my own! Will it amuse the 2 of them??? Or should we stick with picnics in Richmond Park.

hi there

wetland centre is a good day out for all ages. you can just have a stroll round, look at birds, enjoy fresh air. cafe has hearty food - lots of serious bird watchers come with massive camera lenses and sit all day in the hides (don't go into hides with small noisy children btw!)

also an excellent play ground - though a good bit of walking to get there.

But it's not interactive or zoo-like - bits of info about birds which are mainly feeding or sitting quietly minding their own business and the odd temporary exhibit. so if you're not into nature in any way it is not for you. it is all outdoors, obviously, so I wouldn't go when it's raining, though the shop is decent for what it is.

I think it would be quite a good idea, if the weather's nice. The paths are decent for a wheelchair and your toddler can run around energetically. Whether they will actually see any birds up close is another matter.

Have a nice time!

Its a great place. They have free wheelchairs if you need one (but book for the electric one). There is a playground, and lots of captive birds near the start. (The back bit is more for serious birdwatchers.) The interactive museum in the initial building is loved by my kids, but they always get a bit wet. There will also be some activities.

BTW we've been in winter, and the viewing gallery in the main building is nice and warm then.
