Trying to find a really cheap place to stay in Eact Sussex / Brighton - does it exist?

We are just about to move to Hove, and MIL and SIL would like to come and visit for a long weekend.

Our place really isn't ideal to put them both up, and so I thought we might just put them in a cheap BnB sown the road, or something. (MIL and SIL are happy to share).

But I hadn't realised how pricey the accommodation is - OMG is it expensive in Brighton! I'm not sure what we're going to do.

We also have friends coming in a couple of months, and for them I had thought they could hire somewhere self-catering, but again it's really bloody pricey! They'd need somewhere for 5 adults and 2 children.

Does anyone know of anywhere they could stay that's cheap? Seriously everything considered! They're going to be out and about with us, and eating at ours, so the facilities don't need to be great. I was looking at youth hostels last night but even they seem really expensive! (It would need to be a private / family room).

It doesn't even have to be in Brighton. We've got a car, so out of town would be fine.

As we're moving to the coast I'd imagined lots of friends coming to visit over the summer, but I'm not sure how now! I'm sure there must be a way - but I can't find it. Any ideas very greatefully received!

TIA

short term accoms very pricy in brighton area.

camping an option?

unless there is a MNer wanting a temporary house let?

EggyAllenPoe · 11/04/2010 10:18

ooh - exactly how many people do you want acoms for?

maybe a mumsnetter can help, you never know

lowrib · 11/04/2010 10:23

THanks for the reply EggyAllenPoe

Camping isn't an option for MIL unfortunately. She's pretty open minded about where she stays but she has arthritis and camping just wouldn't work for her. I has a look at motorhomes and they are really pricey too! (Trying to think laterally!) I guess you're paying for your bed to have wheels and an engine, and we don't really need that!

Having said that, I'd still be very interested in any recommedations for campsites, to have up my sleeve for more able-bodied mates in the summer.

I just found that the university do very reasonable accomodation, hiring out the student halls in the summer. (Mainly to business / conference guests I think) E.g. They'll do a 6 bedroom self-catering flat for £400 a week.

It doesn't help us for this time unfortunately as the rooms are full of students right now!

There's a Premier Inn in North Street and a Travelodge on the London Road near Preston Park.

Any good?

lowrib · 11/04/2010 11:21

PestoMonster, great minds think alike that's kind of where I started my search.

But - I am at the prices!

The Premier Inn is £72 per night rising to £96 for the Saturday night!

And the Travelodge is only marginally better at £60 rising to £93!

We simply can't afford this unfortunately.

The most immediate stay one is actually MIL only (a long weekend from April 22ish) then later in the year MIL and SIL.

Then we have groups of mates who I hoped would come visit (like the 5 adults / 2 DCs group). They're less of a concern, being sort of young(ish!) and fit etc, but it would be nice to have somewhere up my sleeve for to recommend to them.

The most pressing need if for MIL only though.

We've got room for one extra at ours, but the stairs are really dodgy and just it's not fair with her arthritis. She's OK on stairs in general (she's stayed at my mums, which has loads of stairs) but these ones actually need fixing and the handrail is not to be leaned on, so it's just not doable unfortunately!

grapevinewebsite.co.uk/north_laine.html

might work? Dorm type rooms, but think they do smaller ones too.

EggyAllenPoe · 11/04/2010 13:54

ah the grapevine..an Ozzie friend of mine stayed here months, in their dorm. She remarked that when she finally got her own private space back, and down to some time with Rosie palmer and her five lovely daughters, she hit the ceiling....

I digress.

lol eggy!

Get in touch with the Tirist Information OFiice, they will ahve a list of accommodation from the cheapest to the most expensive.

lowrib · 12/04/2010 22:59

Thanks everyone

I'll have a look at that singalongamumum, I don't think it'll do for MIL as although she's pretty open minded I'm not keen on making her share! But for mates in the summer it could be worth a go, especially if they could get a roo together.

EggyAllenPoe

FiveGoMadInDorset good idea, thanks just need to remember to actually phone them in the daytime. I meant to do it today but got sidetracked. Ho hum.

It does exist!!

DP found At Wilbury. It's a lovely looking B&B in Hove, which is £35 a night for one person (same price every day of the week, which is very reasonable) and run by a lovely guy. He asked what kind of bread by MIL likes, so he knows which kind of flour to use when he bakes it fresh, which is a lovely touch And although it's a vegetarian place, he says he can bring in freshly caught fish if she likes.

I'll update after and let you know what it's like, I think it'll be great.
