Fuerteventura, am I the only one to think it's a pretty awful holiday destination?

Just got back from 9 days in Fuerteventura. Not sure what I was expecting, but from the reviews I'd read and the popularity of the place think I was expecting something else. Starting to wonder if I'm just really fussy!

I've travelled quite a bit, to very varied destinations staying in anything from run down youth hostels, wooden huts to five star hotels. We stayed in Jandia and hired a car to explore the rest of the island. Yes the beaches were nice, golden sand, clean, clear blue sea, and the weather was great if a bit windy. However I couldn't really see any other redeeming features. The food was mediocre, had a couple of nice paellas but otherwise pretty awful for the money. The landscape feels a bit like holidaying in a quarry, and the architecture is fairly uninteresting, (think I was hoping for pretty Spanish type fishing villages). Entertainment wise think Blackpool / skegness, arcades, bad tribute acts. Could go on but feel I'm being a bit of a grump!

Was really just wondering if I'm the only one to have this impression or am I missing something? Are the other islands better or does anyone have better alternatives for future winter sun holidays? Have done winter holidays to Australia, South America and the Maldives prior to children but unfortunately a bit out of our price range these days. Think I might just be expecting too much for the money!

Must add I actually really enjoyed myself, watching the kids building sand castles and splashing in the sea etc, just wouldn't go back.

Without long haul only the Canaries offer warmth in the winter. We've been many times, mainly to Playa Blanca, pre and post Xmas and always had warm weather even if its not sunny every day it's never cold. I was swimming in the heated pool in Dec 2022 when it was snowing in the UK.
I think there's lots to see, some lovely prom walks and nice places for coffee but agree the restaurants aren't the best but we don't tend to eat out so that doesn't bother us. It's always been my happy place even when I lived in Spain for a decade.

However, you've got me a bit worried as I have booked a post Xmas trip to Fuerteventura and was hoping for a similar experience. I've been on a day trip from PB many, many years ago when there was almost nothing there so have no idea what it's like now. To be honest though, if the weather is OK and the place we're staying is as good as it looks I'll be happy.

Egypt and Cape Verde both offer winter sun and are only 6 hours away.

Well, now the OP's kids are grown up I wonder where they holidayed this year? 14 years!

Ha! @BringMeTea we went to Japan for our last holiday, it was amazing! Have had many wonderful holidays over the last 14 years, but never returned to Fuerteventura, maybe I should give it another go 🤔
