crap crap crap! Sky-cots on KLM, how strict on height?

I phoned KLM about a week ago regarding our flight to the U.S. and reserving a sky cot for my 7 month old. They asked his height and weight, and I wasn't entirely sure but said I was positive he was under 65cm and definitely not more than 7 kilograms (and I swear last week this was true). He has been on around the 5th centile for ages.

However, have just measured him and somehow he is about 67-68cm! The limit for sky cots is 65cm. How likely is it they will notice the extra inch? Weight is ok, limit is 9kg and he is only 7.25 as of this morning.

I will seriously cry if I don't get a break from holding him. We are flying Liverpool-Amsterdam-Detroit-Chicago, and I was counting on the long stretch between Amsterdam-Detroit for getting to put him down!

Can I just tell him to slump? Put him in horizontal stripes so he looks shorter? Will they measure him at the gate?

Arrgggggghhhhh.

I can't help you too much but I'd be surprised if they broke out the measuring tape at the gate. I flew long haul with DS who was 10 months on BA and had no problem getting him in their sky cot. The biggest issue we had was every time he'd finally settle in the sky cot, the fasten seatbelts sign would come on and I'd have to get him out which would inevitably wake him up and led to very little rest for either of us.

Agree with laraeo, doubt if they'll measure him.
We've flown with several of our children when infants and they've been over the height or weight limit for skycots but didn't have any problems.

Hope the journey isn't too bad

Oh you'll be fine. We also flew with Virgin when my DD1 was 10mths and she was slightly too big but she was fine laid out slightly diagonal! They certainly won't measure them at the gate!

We never took either of our two out of the cot when the 'fasten seatbelts' sign came one, we'd lean over and put our arms over the cot instead and the hosties would come round and warn us about the danger but let us carry on so we didn't have to wake any child up.

Our 11 month old hated the cot on the flight out to Malaysia - she would do a sleep cycle then wake up as she was too cramped. On the flight back my husband just put her into the Wilkinet Carrier and she (and he) slept that way: hands free and no worries about turbulence.
