Calling all Glaswegians!!!

Hi there,

My DD is 3.6 and DS 19 months and we are off to stay in my mum's flat in East Glasgow for 10 days....her flat is very "adult" and for sale...I am very keen to make sure we are out as much as possible to avoid bored children damaging anything whilst DH and I sort out meals in an unfamiliar kitchen!

Like most, we are limited in budget but want to have a prepared list of things to do to wear them out but also be enjoyable for us too! We will have our car as well so can travel outside the city.

Also, any tips on toys to take to amuse...we need to take the travel cot and pushchair so limited room...is it worth buying a few new things to keep them entertained?

Thanks in advance!

There are lots of parks (if the weather is good) and there's loads to see at Kelvingrove.

Further afield, Edinburgh Zoo is worth a trip, and maybe a day at the beach in Troon or somewhere.

The Zoo is dear, but all the museums etc in Glasgow are free. I'll try and do a link to a "what's on" page for you.

the glasgow science centre is supposed to be good, it's on my "to do" list but not been yet!!

AgentProvocateur · 28/03/2010 21:52

here's some things that are going on

Science centre is fab - you can use Tesco days out vouchers to pay for it, under 3's are free , its a full day out.

I echo the Glasgow Science Centre suggestions.

And there is usually an "Easter Egg Hunt" in one of the parks at this time of year. Sorry, don't know when or where. Maybe someone else will come along and post details or you could try Google.

Welsummer · 04/04/2010 21:38

Thank you very much, great suggestions! I want to make sure we have plenty of things to do and we certainly have now...wish us luck that my LO's don't destroy my mum's flat!!

If you are in east Glasgow, head out to Summerlee Heritage Park in Coatbridge. It's only about 5 miles away. It's a great day out and all free apart from the tram ride which is about 50p.

Kids all swim free during the Easter holidays too so maybe the big pool at Tollcross might be an option.

If you are heading down the west coast for the day, another freebie is Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock. There is a playpark, small castle and petting farm with goats etc. and loads of open space to run around.

HTH

There is an easter event in Queens park 1-8 april

easter pets, face paintingg, easter crafts , and horse&cart rides.. all free

Pollok House have a an easter egg hunt with meet the easter bunny... though you have to pay for that

The science centre is really good but expensive..though you can take a picnic lunch with you and is worth it if you spend all day

If the weather is nice there are lots of lovely walks and beaches around the area

You can take the underground out to scotland street school.. there are usually activities going on in this victorian ? school

can you tell I have been thinking of things to keep ds amused

geordieminx · 04/04/2010 21:54

Calderglen Park is lovely, they have animals, huge park and an indoor hot house type thing with reptiles etc.

Strathclyde park is nice, there are 3 or 4 parks dotted around the lake loch, and of course M&D's which despite its dodgy rep is actually quite good - esp if weather is bad - soft play, amusements, bowling alley, indoor rainforest, crazy golf etc etc

There is an amazing soft play in Motherwell called Rainforest adventure - great for all ages - ds is nearly 3, its his favourite place at the moment - they have a good website.

People's palace/Glasgow green are nice if weather is good, and probably not very far from you.

Failing all that, Toys R Us at Parkhead

glasgowlass · 04/04/2010 21:55

Yeah Glasgows parks are brilliant and as others have said all museums have free entry. Kelvingrove is brilliant.

Calderglen park in East Kilbride is great too (easily accessible with car from east end, free entry).
Tollcross park in the east end is great and the mini zoo(free) is good fun, plus there is a great swimming pool right next to it.

Hope you all have a great time and your mums flat stays intact. My brain is fuzzy just now but if I can think of anything else will let you know and I am sure some other Glaswegian MNers will be along soon with more suggestions.

(have a look at Glasgow city council website and south lanarkshire council website for parks in the local area)

frasersmummy · 04/04/2010 21:59

I have just checked and the transport museum is still open.. been a great favourite of ds for years ..

its closing on the 18 april as its moving to a new location next year

also free

CURLYMAMMA · 04/04/2010 22:06

The tollcross zoo is free and good for wee ones, has a swimming pool right next to it. The park at Glasgow green is pretty cool. Art gallery, transport museum. I think pollok park is doing the free horse rides and egg hunt at the house (might have to pay for that).
