California guides

I'm going to be visiting some national parks in southern California with my two dd's (aged 4 and 7). I'm not sure how exciting they're going to find them.... Does anybody know of any wildlife guides for kids which they could use - looking for trees, flowers etc? We've had them for this country in the past and they've enjoyed them. And, on a driving holiday in France last year we had the I-spy guide which they loved - ticking things off is very exciting!

I've been looking on Amazon.com but haven't found anything as yet.

Thanks,

Go to the park visitor centres and you will find heaps of guides and other nature info materials oriented towards young children.

DC spent AGES in Anza Borrego visitor centre, and that's only a state park!

Anza Borrego is on our itinerary. Good to hear that the visitor centre is good. Desperate for the girls to have a good time. Dh says they're too young for the type of holiday we've got planned. Don't want him to say 'told you so'!

Our day hiking up the Palm Tree canyon in Anza Borrego was one of the very best of our whole month long holiday. Utterly fantastic day.

Most everyone else we talked to that day had seen a huge herd of big horned sheep, too .

Oh, well, except for the bit when DS10yo got lost in the desert with DS5yo... and it was getting dark. And we were a wee bit worried about the mountain lions (though they stay up on the ridge lines, too hot in the desert for them).

The boys just ran off too fast ahead of us, and were found in less than an hour, having followed exactly the route that one of the park staff predicted, and were very close to the visitor centre again. But it was worrying. Just remember it is a wilderness!

I am desperate to visit Death Valley one day, but can't talk DH into it .
