Insurance for a baby who isn't born yet!

Hi, we're planning a holiday in Canada at the beginning of August - trouble is, DC2 isn't due until June. I've tried to get quotes for insurance online but computer says 'no' every time I try to put in a postdated DOB for the new one. I have a feeling this is because the insurers won't insure the baby until it is born to make sure that there are no medical conditions they need to be aware of.

BUT, I'm a bit scared of paying for flights without insuracne, in case there IS a problem after the birth and we have to cancel. Is there any way I can book insurance that will just cover me for holiday cancellation and not include medical bills etc?

Thanks

I got insurance for myself while pregnant, travelling at about month 7. I couldn't do the basic insurance package, but called the call centre and explained the situation. Why not get your quotes, then ring up the insurance providers to ask about adding a pregnancy, then a baby?

You need to speak to someone at the travel insurance company. As a family, we are insured with Aon Insurance. The reason we are insured with them is because they would insure me to fly up to 32 weeks of pregnancy and also when we spoke to them, they said we could just add the new baby to the policy when he is born, which they did.

I don't quite get what you are asking... If you have to cancel the holiday due to you having problems with the birth, then that's your medical issue and should be covered. If touch wood something is wrong with DC2 and you have to cancel, most policies should have an 'optional' you can take out where if a close family member dies or is taken seriously ill, you can make a claim too. You need to speak to the insurance company themselves. Get a few recommendations from forums (look especially for those that will cover late pregnancy as they are usually the most flexible) and call the company up to explain your situation.

'option' not 'optional' - It's usually an extra that will make your policy slightly more expensive but well worth it if you are worried.

Brilliant, thanks for the info - I hadn't thought that MY insurance might cover any potential problems with LO (god forbid). This is where other perspectives really help!

No worries! Good luck on your travels. We have travelled with both DS1 and DS2 at various ages - 4 months old, 7 months old, 18 months old and 2 years old! You need to check with the airlines as well as to how young they will take infants. I think most airlines will take from 2 weeks but do double check, you just never know... It is never easy travelling with young ones but for us, the alternative is being stuck in one place till they are grown-up and we both love our travelling so you just have to take the good and the bad! It's worth it.
