Hi, am hoping to take my DD to see some Roman ruins not too far from home - she loves mosaics and I would love to show her some good examples. Have tried googling but hard to tell what would make a good trip.

It depends on how far you consider "not too far". The Verulamium Museum in St Albans has several large mosaics as well as lots of good stuff about Roman life in England. The museum's next to Verulamium park where there's another room-sized mosaic, with the underfloor heating system visible, in a purpose-built building (it's signposted as The Hypocaust).

St Albans would be about an hour or so away from North Hants if you hit the M25 on a good day. Aside from the museum itself, the park is a lovely place to wander around in the summer as there are the remains of the old Roman city wall to have a look at and a big lake where you can lob food at the ducks. And/or you can also take a stroll up the hill from there to St Albans Cathedral which is well worth a wander round.

(I should be working for the St Albans tourist centre... )

How about Fishbourne Roman Palace, haven't been myself but heard it is very interesting? It is near Chichester off the A27 and definitely day trip distance. They have a website www.sussexpast.co.uk/property/site.php?site_id=11

Was hoping to find somewhere closer but St Albans in particular looks like it could be worth a trip. Have friends nearby so could combine with a catch up. Thank you.

Fishbourne is very good, have you looked at Silchester, nr Reading. Can't remember if there's a mosaic but some very well preserved Roman stuff.

Hi, no I haven't looked at Silchester 'cos I was told it is a live dig rather than anything much to go and look at iyswim. Maybe I'm wrong? I did try to google it but the website referred to Reading Museum, and when I googled Reading Museum I couldn't find any reference to mosaics... so drew a blank.
