Wookey Hole and any other days out in Somerset suitable for 4 and 6 yo?

We're travelling down with DH (who will be working) last week in March to stay in Somerset for a few days. Need something to do to entertain DDs (4 and 6).

DH said he'd heard of The Wookey Hole but I've just looked at the website and am not sure. 4yo is a bit...errr...delicate and thing the witch might scare her. Can we avoid the Wookey witch or does she get everywhere?

While it is our Easter break here, I've noticed that it is the following 2 weeks that Somerset schools are closed and so some of the attractions (ie the Circus, which they would really enjoy) will be closed. What else is there to do there?

Also if anyone has any recommendations of other places to go. We have an NT card so will be hitting the National Trust properties, too!

TIA

Where are you staying? I'm on the somerset/dorset border, my girls (age 6 and 4)like going to clarks village (so i can shop and they get to play in the play area), Glastonbury Tor is nice on a sunny day, i havn't taken the dd's to wookey hole as dd1 is a little sensitive, i have been there a few times and thought it was great.

I don't think they're too young for wookey hole, although the guide tells a slightly spooky story at the beginning with some lighting effects. The witch is actually very friendly, but I think she was a bit busy the day I went (halloween).

They don't at any point turn out all the lights, which I was expecting them to.

Wells cathedral is worth a look, there's a great clock in there with moving figures 'n stuff on the hour, and there's a brilliant sweetie shop at the other end of the main square near the cathedral.

You could walk up glastonbury tour? you have to get a bus from glasto town centre (in the main car park) and there are some great shops in glasto that sell ermmm, unusual(!) things.

You could always drive into Bristol to go ice skating if the weather is pants.

I'll see if I can think of some more.

glastonbury tor, not tour

Other things you can do at wookey hole are - there's a (small) dinosaur park, and a really really good old fashioned penny arcade, which is massive. There's a circus museum (possibly don't let the delicate 4yr old look into the mermaid exhibit and a ball pool/climbing frame play area.

If you don't like the look of wookey hole, then maybe you'd prefer cheddar caves? I think it's a bit less 'touristy', but I've not been there, only my dd has been, with school.

Weston-S-Mare is good for a chavtastic day out, but the pier is still closed as far as I know.

Crealy is just down the motorway. It's perfect for that age of kids.

Wookey Hole is good. The 'human' witch isn't usually there - they just shine as light on the rock formation and tell the story. Mine weren't scared as long as there was a hand to hold Court Farm near Banwell is a favourite with mine. Animal farm (brean)is muddy and a bit scruffy but they love it. Brean Down is a fantastic walk - there is an old fort at the end - but might be a bit long for little legs. If you are going to visit Cheddar caves only go to Gough's cave - it's the best one. The gorge itself is quite pretty out of tourist season.

How come the witch isn't usually there? there was a big hoo haa about the job, and that she got it. If I remember right, the wages weren't half bad, either! Surely for wages like that she should be there all the ruddy time

OrmRenewed · 16/03/2010 15:22

Well I've only seen here once. I thought she was there during holidays and stuff. She wasn't scary anyway.

Scrudd · 16/03/2010 15:24

I've only been once, and she seemed to have been roped into doing crowd control at the entrance

Thanks everyone - DH is down there this week so I have passed on recommendations for him to have a scout about!

Marne - we're staying in Taunton so not far from Clarks Village. Sounds a bit like Cheshire Oaks near us.

Scrudd - thanks for the tip off about Crealy, looks good for my DDs but it's open weekends only until 25th March which is the day we come back

Orm - will look up those farms, thanks!
