What kind of breaks are good with a toddler?

We feel in need of a holiday (last few breaks / hols have been to stay with in-laws and I really think we need to make memories before it all blurs into one!) HAd long year... now really need a Spring break!

Have an active 13 month DS.... he dislikes the car but loves everything else. We like going to new places.

Where have you been successfully with a young one?

Got NO idea where to start looking / thinking. MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE

seaside, because there is nothing on a beach a child can break.
The Gower was one of our best.

If they like trains, go somewhere via train - saves the screaming in the car journey and they can walk around. Just had long weekend in Yorkshire with DS1 (nearly 4) and 13 month old DS2 which worked well - anywhere that will cater for kids (kids meals, few toys there) is a good place to stay and keep your expectations low on what you'll do while you're away.

If money is no object, take a look at the luxury family hotels (you get a MN discount) for a short break - scattered around the country, have creches etc. First went to one when DS1 was 18 months old and was a lovely break.

We went to Higher Lank Farm (www.higherlankfarm.co.uk/) in Cornwall last year. DS was 20 months then.

We all had a great time. We stayed in the cottage, which is totally set up for toddlers.

The kids loved feeding the animals and just generally playing on the farm.

It was a little expensive but it was our first family holiday and we wanted it to be a special one and it really was.

It was a bit of a long drive (we're in the SE) but we too a break for lunch and tried to conincide it with DS's nap which worked on the way there but not the way back...

Anyway, highly recommended, we'd definitely go back.

Thank you - sea, trains and animals all excellent ideas... will keep looking. dinkystinky - what did you do in Yorkshire...

Got to adjust ideas of what can actually do - long walks are out I suppose!

no, long walks are fine if you have only one child and a decent backpack (eg Little Life).
Have never yet met a child that doesn't love being carried!

Our trip to yorkshire consisted of a short walk on the yorkshire moors (DS1 friendly length rather than our usual long walks), trip to the seaside at Whitby (both boys enjoyed - especially the fish and chips on the seaside for lunch) and a trip to a farm/activity centre (again something for the kids rather than us). And lots of chilling in our nice hotel and playing in the pool.. not the most adventurous of long weekends away but the weather was nice and we all had a nice time.

Take an Ergo, light puschair for naps and have a city break. Your child will never be this accommodating again! We went to Paris, Bruges and Brussells and it was great.
