Hiring a car for 7 in the US

Has anybody done this? And if so, what did you hire? The car hire sites aren't very helpful regarding luggage space. We need something big enough for 4 adults, 3 kids (2, 4 & 6) and our luggage. Considering a Dodge Grand Caravan. Has anybody hired on of these? TIA!

We had A Town & Country last December (3 adults, 4 DC).
Keep in mind that (as usual) there are different models of each car -- what I mean is we had the posh T&C car, but there's a more basic version with a bit less room.
A Dodge Grand Caravan should suit your group (from what I have researched). But it partly depends on leg room needed and size of bottoms (being blunt about it). 4 adults the size of my dad (6'4" and about 230 lbs) + 2 kids would find it impossible in the T&C.

Even though everyone else in our group was much shorter/skinner than my dad, As far as my dad was concerned, the T&C we had was completely unsuitable for 4 kids + 3 adults except over very short journeys.

hth.

Chrysler voyager. Fits 7. Can gets lots of bags in the boot too.

We are 3 average adults, and my dad who's over 6ft but not large (IYSWIM), and 3 kids aged 2, 4 & 6. I was planning to take booster cushions of the older 2, and hire a 5-point-harness type for the 2 year old.

If you can find one hire a Yukon Denali. Do not be intimidated by the size. It is very easy to drive and you will have loads of space for moving around, luggage and leg stretching. Have fun!

I would be intimidated by anything massive and that looks as if I should be crossing the Outback in it...

Second vote for the Chrysler Voyager - hired one of these year before last in states, bit bigger than used to but not massive and got used to very quickly - plenty of room for all.

don't worry about it being massive, americna roads and car parkign spaces are massive, so it really doesn't matter!

AllBuggiedOut · 15/03/2010 23:23

How many of you was that, DadInstead? I might have luggage for 7 and a mountain buggy in tow

Good news about parking spaces being massive! And the roads look nice and straight (panicking, me? never...)

That was 6 of us and we had a lot of luggage of on the way back to the airport. Not much on the way from the airport as BA were having one of their days.
