Ryanair vs Easyjet - what a choice I know!

I want to fly from Liverpool to Fuerteventura in May and the only flights are by Ryanair or Easyjet.

Now I have flown with Easyjet before with no problems but the Ryanair flight times are much better because they are daytime flights.

We could fly from Manchester but again the flight times are not as good.

Sooooooo I can easily find lots of negative reports on Ryanair but does anyone actually have a positive experience to report please?

www.airlinequality.com has given both recent good and poor reviews of Ryanair.

Out of those two airlines I would choose Easyjet over Ryanair. Ryanair will just charge you and keep trying to make money out of you. I would actually pay the extra and use a proper airline.

mummylin2495 · 09/03/2010 14:26

i came back from Gran Canaria last week with ryanair and had no problems at all.It is a cheap airline and if you are happy just to have a basic flight it will be fine. The drinks eg tea/coffee were expensive ,but i suppose they have to make money where they can.

nicm · 09/03/2010 15:33

sorry have not flown ryanair but have flown easyjet loads with easyjet and would recommend them.

nicm · 09/03/2010 15:35

oops def need to start hitting preview!

policywonk · 09/03/2010 15:36

Easyjet every time. Have flown with them loads and never had any trouble. Heard lots of awful things about Ryanair - and even if I hadn't I'd avoid them because Michael O'Leary is such a bloody fool.

Polgara2 · 09/03/2010 15:41

You are all just telling me what I should admit to myself really - go with Easyjet! Oh well the dc will just have to be tired I guess lol!

Thank you

I've flown with both and there is little between them in all honesty IF you can swallow having to pay Ryan Air for priority boarding with the kids (whereas Easy jet let you board first without charge if you have littlies)

geordieminx · 09/03/2010 15:47

I would make the decision based on flight times/ease/price.

We are flying to Tenerife in May, used to fly with Globspan, but as they are now in administration the only other choice we have (from scotland) is ryanair - It'll be fine, no meals etc but I can cope with that, the only thing I worry about is getting there, and not being delayed, and I dont think you can guarentee that with any airline unfortunately.

squeaver · 09/03/2010 15:50

I'd do a proper price comparison first because the extra charges on Ryanair, especially for priority boarding as heavens says, really do add up.

If Ryanair still comes out cheaper - and you really read all the conditions on baggage weight etc, make sure you check in online, don't forget to print your boarding cards - then just go with them.

MrsJohnDeere · 09/03/2010 16:07

Easyjet.

kslatts · 10/03/2010 11:37

Ryanair can be very cheap, we have travelled as a family of 4 from London to Ireland and the total cost of the return flights was 8p.

We have flown loads of times with them and generally it's been an okay experience but if you choose Ryanair bear in mind the following.

  • arrive at the airport in plenty of time, if you are a minute late for checking they will not let you fly
  • get to the gate as soon as possible and join the queue to board the plane, if you have paid for priority boarding you will get to be one of the first to board, otherwise you will have to wait. They do not give priority to parents with young children. In my experience not many passengers pay for the priority boarding. We have only had a problem once, when we flew back from Spain we got near the front of the queue but the changed the gate at the last minute and as a result we ended up being one of the last to board, dh had to sit on his own, dd2 sat accross the aisle from me and dd1 (who was 8 at the time) had to sit about 3 rows in front of us.
NoahAndTheWhale · 10/03/2010 11:40

I would go with EasyJet.

Although my main problem with Ryanair has been the out of the way airports you end up at - if it is the same airport I might be swayed a bit.

GooseyLoosey · 10/03/2010 11:41

I think Ryanair also need passports for kids on domestic flights which is what put us off.

Cies · 10/03/2010 11:47

Check all the charges etc before booking, because Ryanair often end up much more expensive in the end.

I'd always choose easyjet - the cabin crew are always really friendly and helpful, which is great when flying with kids.

trixymalixy · 10/03/2010 11:48

easyjet without a doubt.

Bucharest · 10/03/2010 11:49

Have flown lots with both.

Easyjet get 5 stars from me.

Ryanair - you get what you pay for.

If it's really cheap, then I go Ryanair, if not, then Easyjet every time.

30andLurking · 10/03/2010 11:53

Easyjet. No debate.

The concept of both is the same, it's just the attitude that comes with all Ryanair staff that makes me want to rip off my own arm just so I have something to beat them over the head with.

choppychopster · 10/03/2010 12:00

Have flown lots with both from Liverpool. Hate having to pay all the extra charges with both (although Ryanair do seem worse for this), but have had really cheap fares and found both to be very punctual. Found service on both to be a little cold, but they got us where we wanted to be, on time and with minimal fuss.

If I was in you position, if there's not much difference in price I would actually choose Ryanair for the better flight times. Hate having to be at the airport super early in the morning or worse leaving resort in the middle of the night after a day hanging around because you have to leave your accommodation before lunchtime.

wannaBe · 10/03/2010 12:09

I would rather go without a holiday than fly ryanair. Had a horrible, horrible experience with them last year (during the whole stansstead debacle but the day before so because David dimblebee wasn't flying that day it didn't make it to the media) and would never, ever use them again.

Do bear in mind that it is well known that Ryanair bump people off of flights so they can charge them to go on the next flight.

Do also bear in mind that you will literally have to pay for everything, and that priority boarding is in actual fact a scrum to get to the plane first.

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/03/2010 12:13

I have flown with both many times and I would say that I would go with either tbh.

Yes getting seats on Ryanair is a bit of a scrum but it is not that bad.

Don't buy any food or drink on the plane as it is foul and really expensive.

If you will save money with Ryanair (and make sure you have taken into account ALL of the extra charges, the ryanair wesbite is quite sneaky) the I would go with Ryanair if the times are more suitable.

logrrl · 10/03/2010 20:26

I would choose Easyjet every time. Have flown Ryanair a couple of times and have a strict "never again" policy .

orienteerer · 10/03/2010 20:31

EasyJet (but refuse to fly Ryanair), however I guess better flight times might swing it for me.

jollyma · 10/03/2010 20:39

Easyjet for me every time, i hate ryan air. If you get split up from your dc's you can make a scene as they don't carry unaccompanied minors.

Polgara2 · 10/03/2010 21:43

Wow lots of thoughts thank you .

Am still a bit torn tbh. I really really want the better flight times but am really really worried that flying Ryanair will muck up our much waiting for holiday. We don't go abroad very often and I don't want anything to go wrong.

The price difference doesn't really bother me tbh they are both cheaper than a package deal.
