Things that attach to car seat to keep 3yr old occupied on long car journey

DH is taking DD (3.6yr) to see granny and this entails a whole day long car journey. Can any one recommend something that attaches to car seats that would entertain her? She usually has a few toys as we travel around town but I can't see DH stopping on the M1 to pick up anything she drops, as she frequently.

dvd player.

Probably not what you want to hear, and there a few yoghurt knitters people on here that will suggest countless games of I spy, but as someone who has done 3 hour journey with a toddler since birth it has been a fail safe life saver.

If your DH is doing the journey with her alone then I agree - DVD player is probably your best bet.

I used to be against them, because we never had them when I was younger and me and my sister always managed to entertain ourselves/each other, but then someone reminded me, we were out of car seats as soon as we could be trusted not to jump around the car, so it was different to how it is for children travelling in cars now - we could reach for dropped toys etc for example.

And for an only child as well with one adult, driving, it might be the lazy option, but sometimes the lazy way is the only sane way!

DVD player. children stories (lots of them and new ones) on an ipod, with headphones, then you don't have to listen to them all as well.

magnetic drawing thing.

stickers

get a box to put next to her with a selection of tatt in it that she can rumage through.

my dd has a art pack from elc its a fold up table that attaches to the back of front seat and opens up and has colouring pad, section for crayons and little pouches to put other stuff in.don't have it in car all the while but do if going on a long journey.

Story CD's go down well with my Ds, but we'll probably invest in a DVD player soon.

I would get some talking books, there are some great childrens ones available (we loved 'stories for 3yr olds but that was on tape) that come with the accompanying book, and a PING signals when the child should turn the page

DD also uses her leap pad in the car but that doesnt 'attach'

I accidentally discovered the solution to this yesterday and only because I had it lying around on the car floor

Bubblewrap! Kept dd amused for 40 minute journey and she didn't want to get out at the end despite the lure of a steam train, she wanted to carry on til she got to the "end">

Could prob get an hour or 2 out of a big piece!

Don't currently have a dvd player but will be investing in one shortly too.

In fact this thread has inspired me to buy some story cd's!

We have a couple that came with books but generally they're pretty short, only 10 mins so so.

I've just bought 3 Cd's that run for a hour or so each from the BBC Shop - all less than £4 each. I got Thomas, Noddy and Winnie the Pooh.

Thanks for the ideas so far. I've ordered off ebay a padded tray that can go over DD's knees and it has a deep lip to stop pencils falling off. I'm still looking for other ideas. I'm not sure DH will want to listen to a talking book and DD hasn't used a walkman type thing before.

Just bought DS some childrens binoculars - just kept him very occupied on a 45 min car journey with nothing else to

Otherwise, DVD player and Peppa Pig.

If I am on my own with DS 3.7 I keep a box of 'tricks' on the front passenger seat and randomly pass things through to him. He swaps and lets me know when he wants a new thing. We also have CD stories - on a holder on the sun visor for easy reach - plus I turn the speakers to rear and left so I dont have to listen to it!! He also has a lap tray which does help with toys and snacks.

NoseyNooNoo · 02/04/2010 22:28

I thought I'd update. We just has a lap tray and audio books. The tray was a stunning success apparently because DD could draw and not lose her pencils and could 'read' her magazines without dropping them. The audio books were good too.
