Mixing carseats with no carseats

What do you do when eldest dc has outgrown the need for a carseat? It can't be comfortable sitting next to carseats - they're all lumpy and hard on the outside, the only padding is inside.

How about a very thin pillow,to lean against on car seat side. Or a towel/other type of padding draped over side of car seat.

Mmm, that's not a bad idea. I could use bungees or elastics to attach something to the toddler's carseat. Probably couldn't do that with the other carseat. Have to think where ds1 would go in the car.

I have some time to get around this problem. what do others do?

There used to be something that addressed this issue some years ago - I rememer seeing it in catalgoues when ds1 was a baby. It wwas a piece of stiff fab ric with padded blocks around the edge, to be placed behind the dc in the car, so that they could lean against the cushions when they wanted to sleep. It wawsn't a safety device, but a comfort device. Anyone seen such a thing recently?

Interesting dilemma - haven't come across it before, but agree its not ideal to have a combo of carseat/no carseat

I've not seen a car seat cushion on the market lately that would serve the purpose of protecting against a neighbouring carseat - they are all back support etc not side support.

Having a good think about it, I would probably use a small L shaped breastfeeding pillow.

It could be squished along the side and bottom of the neighbouring carseat and act as a soft barrier between the two, without interferring with the actual car seat itself - or imposing too much on the space of the normal seat.

Hope that helps. If I come across anything else more suited whilst researching my website, I'll let you know.

All the best.

i'm not ssure, it can't be any worse than sitting against the door of the car etc though??

When we all go out on long journeys my 9yr old DD sits between two booster cushions, one with a full back and one without.

She doesn't really have a problem with it but she's quite skinny. We do have a couple of small squishy roll shaped cushions (filled with polystyrene beads) which they use as pillows if they want to go to sleep.
DD1 in the middle leans against DS's seat and DD2 leans against the door.
