How to feed 3 month old on flight to Oz?

Hello
I'm really stressing about flying to Australia with our 3 month old and 3 year old. I was planning to take prepacked formula and steribottles for the flight but have just been told by the airport and the airline that you can't take these through Singapore Airport so now I'm in a tizz. Has anyone done this recently and if so what did you do about feeding your baby?

Also I'm using Aptamil and apparently they don't sell it in Oz so I'm planning to take a load of formula with us but this will be a pain as it's so bulky and we'll need at least 3 probably 4 tubs. Anyone got any better ideas? I had planned to send it over in advance but the post office told me you can't send milk to Australia.

Sorry I'm usually very organised and a calm traveller but this is really freaking me out for some reason.

Also my 3 month old refused to take the steri bottles I bought so am thinking I'll just have to take our usual bottles instead. Has anyone taken Dr Brown's bottles abroad and if so is there a cooler bag/flask that fits Dr Brown's in?

Sorry for all the questions -am particularly sleep deprived today so not thinking straight!

Thanks

How long are you going for? Phone the airline and ask them what they can do for you.

going for 3 weeks -tried calling the airline and they weren't very helpful. I was just hoping someone had done it recently and could tell me what they did

sorry never done the trip like that

but I have taken Dr Browns bottles abroad for DS as they were the only bottles he could drink from when he was little
He was also 3 months old when we traveled
I sterilised his bottles and put them in one of those freezer bags with a zip.
I also took a large airtight container (lock and lock one I think) and the tablets for cold water sterilising
So while we were traveling I was able to sterilize the bottles without a problem as all I needed was cold clean water.

For a cooler I used the Avent bag, the standard one and found that it fits 2 Dr Browns bottles without a problem, a bit tight but it does fit.

You can get travel steriliser bags on ebay. One box has 7 bags so a weeks worth. Called Oasis from memory. It is a big draw sting bag with tablet in it or as someone says a tupperare with milton tablets works just as well.

Order ready made cartons for UK to Singapore and then take powder in one of those dispensers for Singapore into Australia - what part are you going to?

When I last went through Singapore which was last year they were not bothered at all about sealed pre-mixed cartons of formula but it could well have changed?

Cabin crewe should give you hot water for formula. You just need to be a little more prepared than you would if you had the cartons.

If she's refusing the steri-bottles then you need to be prepared with plenty of Dr Browns.

Sounds daft but depending on how long your layover in Singapore is you could nip to the ladies and clean out the bottles and put them in yor box or bag whatever you deicde to sterilise with and then you are fresh for the second leg into Oz?

Sounds a lot but probably not that much more than what you are doing now. You will just need bottles, cartons or powder, bag with tablet in it and access to water in Singapore Airport?

I am in Oz and no, they don't do Aptamil.

If you are coming to Perth, you could always consider posting your aptamil over to me - I'd be happy to hold on to it until you get here. Just a suggestion.

hhhmmm, just read your bit about posting milk over. I have to go to the PO tomorrow so will check what they say from this end for you.

You may be able to pre-order your Aptamil cartons and pick them up from Boots once you have passed through security. I don't know if you can pre-order at all airports - but you can definately do this in Manchester. Look at Boots website about ordering and collecting in-store. Order enough for your entire journey. I do seem to remember they were pretty relaxed in Singapore about travelling with sealed formula. However, I'd also recommend you take powder in a dispenser for your journey from Singapore to Perth, just in case. Cabin crewe should provide you with hot water whenever you ask (suggest you mix the powder with half hot water and then add cooled water to bring it to room temp quickly). Baby changing facilities at the airport in Singapore are excellent. They have hot water available from a boiler, which you can use to prepare powdered formula at the airport if you want, or to clean your bottles. Suggest you take small amount of detergent in a bottle (which will have to go in the clear bag with any other liquids) and a brush so you can clean bottles with the boiling water at the airport in Singapore.
I bought S26 formula when I was in Australia, and also Karicare (or something like that). My DD usually drinks Aptamil here. Have your tried giving your DC anything other than Aptamil? If not, maybe try before you go so she is used to something different.
I used microwave steriliser bags while we wer in OZ. Good for about 20 uses.
I too, became uncharacteristically stressed about feeding on my first long haul flight, so I hope this helps.

You will need to contact customs here (where are you flying to) to see if you are allowed to bring in unmade formula. But I have a horrible feeling, that because you can't send it, (i.e. mail it) it won't clear customs if you bring it with you.

We don't have Aptamil here, so not sure on your options if you are unable to bring it. There are several obviously, but it would depend on your LO & whether a change of formula would bother him/her.

Jen74277 · 16/03/2010 13:53

You will be able to take powdered formula into Australia. You will need to declare it on your Customs form. They might ask to take a look at it, but they didn't for us. I told them what I had (powdered and sealed ready made) and they let us through withour looking.

I have done the Oz flights 3 times with my DD at the ages 9 months, 22 months and 30 months. You can take water and baby formula but you will be asked to taste the water. Your 3 year should be ok as he/she will simply be drinking water from a sippy. Again they may ask you to taste it. In Oz you can get a brand called S26 for babies and they sell them 1 x 250ml cartons or a 4 pack. or you can buy in in a tin and there are various other brands too.
On my first trip I packed 4 bottles in my carry on and made the milk up as I needed. I asked cabon crew to rinse out the bottles with boiling water after each use. There are hot water taps in all the baby change rooms at Singapore airports so you can rinse them yourself when you land. Alternatively make all the formula beforehand and ask for it to be stored in the airplane fridge and reheat when needed. You can ask for additional water at one of the cafes in Changi airport and they sometimes give milk for free for your toddler.
If you prefer to use Aptamil just pack plenty in your checked luggage. Pn my first trip I bought 4 tins in my luggage!
