We're spending a couple of days in a flat on Hazellville Rd N19 with our 19 month old DS. We aren't very familiar with London, and we're meeting some childless friends in the afternoons. Is there anywhere in walking distance we can go that would let DS burn off some energy, but would also be good for adults? I'm trying to think of rainy day plans, as the Heath or Waterlow Park will be great if it's dry. Thank you!

Erm, if you are serious about covered places within walking distance then the short answer is no.

There are child friendly restaurants and cafes nearby but nowhere where they can let off steam in a more vigorous way. Better off getting on a bus and meeting in the centre of town e.g. british museum, southbank centre etc etc.

Hope the weather holds up!

Hampstead Heath is great for non-rainy days. There is a One o'clock club there (gospel oak end) which is covered for kids under 5 - open weekdays - good for rainy days. Also over at Kentish Town West is Talacre Centre - soft play area and baby gym (for under 5s). If you google it, you'll find the session times. Some nice cafes on Swains Lane too are good for meeting up for brunches/afternoon coffees with friends and all fairly small person friendly.

Sorry just realised you want it to be adult friendly not kid friendly - best bet is the southbank. Tate Modern good for kids and the adults can have a nice coffee and some culture.

Highgate Woods for a cafe and a walk/play

Lauderdale House in Waterlow Park for the same.

But, as for something covered, see creditcrunched above.

Agree on Talacre Centre but might be a bit much for childfree people.

Thanks everyone, we're going to try Lauderdale House on Sunday as it's the last day of a children's art display. May brave the buses as well, but worried about going the wrong way/ getting lost. Cross fingers for dry weather!
