Great Fire of London

DD1 has been doing the Great Fire of London at school, and DH and I were thinking about taking all 3 DDs to London for a day during half-term. We'd like to do something connected to the Great Fire, but looking on the web, there's not a lot at Pudding Lane! Does anyone have ideas on where we might take them? DD1 is 6, BTW and DD2 is 4. (DD3 is 18 mos, so won't care where we go ).

The monument!

Well, my Googling skills are clearly shit! Thank you Martha

Also, what about going to St. Paul's, which was built after the original St. Paul's burnt down in the fire. Then maybe up to St. Bart's to contrast it with a church that survived the fire.
Museum of London (near St. Bart's) has some stuff on the fire
Lots of great cafes round there too.

think the museum of london has a exhib on?

Dd did The Great Fire of London at school and dragged me all across London on the tube to Pudding Lane.

There isn't much there at all except the monument.

Be warned, I nearly hyperventilated half way up and dh wouldn't go up.

Your 6 year old might do it but there is no way you will get the younger ones up there. It is a very steep, spiral staircase with little passing room and no other way out.

The view is spectacular though.

Martha, I love you! Will now spend some time reading up on all that so I can talk knowledgeably about it with DD1.

One of the many reasons why MN is so great.

Looks like the Museum of London is going to be our best bet - I suppose DH could take DD1 up the Monument but the other 2 would be pretty bored waiting at the bottom.

Thanks to you all.

if you do you up to St. Bart's or the museum you must also buy patisserie here.

islandofsodor · 11/02/2010 23:37

Dh waited with ds at the bottom whilst we went up. I think sweets and crisps helped

You get a certificate when you come out saying you have climbed it.

Take ventolin!

St Pauls is amazing they ahve statues in the lower part (you may have to pay extra) that were saved from the fire, they are still black!

Poledra · 21/02/2010 09:58

Just wanted to say we went to London , and followed your suggestions - went to the Monument (though DD1 decided she didn't fancy climbing up it) then went to St Paul's. The scorched statues were a big hit. The the MoL - DD1 now desperate to get back to school tomorrow so she can tell her teacher all about it.

Unfortunately, didn't have time for the patisserie, which greatly disappointed me

Thanks again all for your help - it was so much easier when I knew what I was looking for.
