Iceland anyone?

Has anyone any experience of Iceland as a family? We would be fascinated by the scenery, geothermal stuff - but are a bit concerned about food, and sulphurous smell with two relatively fussy children!

I've never been but dh has an Icelandic friend. I can ask him to ask about food and such if you wish (All I do know is that his friends dw has banned him from eating dried fish in the house ).

Dh spoke to his friend today.

He said that if you are stopping in Reykjavik as your main base then food shouldn't be a problem as most tastes are catered for.

With regards to the sulphur smell, he said that there is denying that it does indeed smell!

He also says that if you are on a flight out of Iceland be prepared for lots of people eating dried fish and 'we make no apologies for it' .

I hope that helps until someone with personal experience comes along.

I went to Iceland nearly 3 years and toured for a week. I don't eat meat or chicken and had no trouble getting food I could eat anywhere. They love their pizzas and burgers as much as we do. We did do sandwiches in our hotel rooms a few times to save some cash. There's loads of convenience stores where you can find things to make a picnic.

I never saw anyone eating dried fish on the plane and being 20 weeks pregnant with a delicate tummy I think I would have noticed.

I only noticed a strong smell in areas with geysers and bubbling mud pools (cool but really stinky).

I loved Iceland and when I can afford it I will be back.

Resurrecting this thread in the hope of more responses - we are looking at Iceland. We were going to go on a family adventure package tour with other families, but having been told that the organised tour does not stay at hotels with interconnecting rooms, we've decided to do it ourselves.

We always have 2 interconnecting rooms when we stay at hotels, so that the children can sleep in a separate room to us (so they can get to sleep early without requiring that we too need to turn in early for the night), but with a connecting door so we can supervise them effectively. Surely there are hotels that offer this in Iceland?

Have no idea about hotel rooms with interconnecting doors, but would recommend an apartment if you are staying in Rekjavick for more than a night.

What ages are your children?
